Motorcylces in Violation of Winter Tire Rules

Monday, October 20, 2014 @ 3:55 AM

tiresignPrince George, B.C. –  While  the weekend was one  lovely  warm one in Prince George, motorcycle  riders  may not have realized they  could have been fined.

Although the weather was  gorgeous, and oh so tempting to  get those last  rides of the season  in, the   winter tire rules are in effect.

All passenger vehicles must  have  winter tires that are marked with the  snowflake mountain image, or  are labeled M+S.  such tires are simply  not available  for  the typical cruiser motorcycle, and  that means, technically, they would be in violation of the rules.

That means drivers could have been  given a violation ticket, or  have their travel plans halted.

The  winter tire rule  applies to  highway 16 and 97, and in Prince George, that includes   Victoria,  and First Avenue in addition to the  usual  highway markings.

250News has had several calls from folks wondering  when they should have their  winter tires on their vehicles,  and the  sign above makes it clear, they  should have been on  as of the 1st of October and  to stay on till the end of March.

No such thing as common sense anymore. The law must be obeyed, sheesh.

My Harley has all season tires.

And if I sold tires I would want you to have them on in July so that all your studs and tire wear would increase.

notice there are no morotcycles on the sign….

I somehow doubt there will be police officers skulking around looking at everyones tires.
Having said that one can be sure if you get stopped or have an accident that tires will be looked at and if they are not up to law, the chances of a ticket and or a tow bill are pretty good.

I wonder if they are going to enforce this through all of BC, including the lower mainland, or only in selected areas?

No SUV on the sign

I have been told that this topic was on Global news recently and motorcycles are exempt.

And remember, normal tires are only good to 7 degrees. At 6 degrees they are suddenly blocks of cement, the equivelent of driving on banana peels. If you dare drive below 7 degrees celcius without winter tires then you support Al Quaeda and probably torture kittens. At least according to the tire commercials.

Reading the comments left by people here today make me realize why official have to be so specif around enforce laws. Common sense isn’t very common anymore.

You believe Global, about anything?

“Slow down and live.” “Keep right except to pass”.
Cheers

interceptor – that was funny. Thanks for the morning chuckle.

It was reported over a week ago that Todd Stone (Minister of Transportation) instructed the RCMP to not issue tickets to motorcyclists who weren’t sporting any winter tires or studs on their rides.

So why aren’t there winter tires for motorcycles?

What about bicycles?

exactly Saemut.. see a few fellows on their bikes pedding back and forth along pulpmill road in the middle of winter.

What about all the broken hips and arms with the elderly falling on the ice ? It is draining our health system ! They should be mandated to wear studded rubber boots or sign a waiver that the rest of us taxpayers don’t have to pay ! Anyone over 65 not wearing studded boots should be fined !

If the City would sand the few existing sidewalks in a timely and effective manner many of the falls would be eliminated. We had a bad fall because the City did not use any real sand but marble sized round pebbles which of course make one fall even faster if they had nor done anything at all!

A week ago the minister of transportation Todd Stone declared motorcycles to be exempt.
