Weekend Scare a “Wake-Up Call” says Cullen

Tuesday, October 21, 2014 @ 3:29 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Calling last weekend’s scare involving a Russian container tanker off of BC’s north coast “a wake-up call,” Skeena-Bulkley Valley NDP MP Nathan Cullen isn’t buying assurances by Enbridge Northern Gateway that their oil supertankers would be safe.

“If this doesn’t wake people up nothing really will. Does it take taking ducks out of the ocean covered in oil and whales washing up on the beach?”

Yesterday Northern Gateway’s communications manager Ivan Giesbrecht told 250 News that the company would avoid a similar situation by not leaving or going to terminal in severe weather, by attaching two super tugs to the ships and by equipping those tugs with crews and emergency equipment.

But Cullen isn’t buying it.

“Them (Enbridge) promising not to go out into rough weather is saying I’m going to promise the Chinese companies buying this oil are just going to wait patiently for storms to blow off. Secondly, where will the tugs hook up to these super-tankers? We’ve been asking this question for years – is it 10 minutes outside of Kitimat or is it 200 km?”

He says in an ironic twist of fate he was discussing his anti-tanker bill while the drama unfolded – a bill he plans to discuss in detail during a BC tour which makes a pit-stop in Prince George this Friday evening.

The details of Cullen’s visit are expected to be finalized by tomorrow with Enbridge likely to be a hot topic of debate.

“What I find dishonest about what the company is saying is that they give illusions that they’re going to have safety in place but never give you the details and the devil is in the details when it comes to tankers.”

Comments

As the NDP lose another member from the temporary Quebec wing, I would surmise they have begun their slide back to an obscure third party, with nothing to offer but whining.
Maybe Cullen isn’t aware but the vessel was towed to port with no incidence. If his entire scheme revolves around jumping up and down and wishing for the worst every-time a ship radios for assistance, then he will be living the chicken little moniker to its fullest. Not to mention he will be tuned out earlier than before they disappear after the next election.

Cullen take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Feel better now?

The freighter which gave the Coast Guard trouble on the weekend was 135m in length. Supertankers are routinely over 400m in length. Only Enbridge shills or pollyannas would not have any concerns.

Willfully ignorant people are as old as the bible:

Jeremiah 5:21

Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not

Cullen,
what a loser. you don’t mention anything about the dozens of container ships, coal ships and ships taking out lumber etc from the port of prince Rupert to help keep the economy going.
jimmy hughes you are right on with your comment.

Quoting fiction? Funny!
Nathan’s looking for votes LOL.

Don’t you just love the garbage spewed by frightened right- wing nut jobs.

Lets not forget that this ship had 500 tonnes of Bunker Fuel which it needed to get it to Russia. All ships of this size or bigger have this amount of Bunker Fuel in their tanks. So that’s just a part of having ships on the ocean. The other oil was in containers and amounted to 200 tonnes. So really not that much oil on the ship.

For all those people who go on ocean cruises, you should be aware that your cruise ship carries a lot more fuel than mentioned above.

So Cullen and the left wing nut jobs are trying to get some mileage on this issue because they have very little to do, and have all day to do it.

“Ivan Giesbrecht told 250 News that the company would avoid a similar situation by not leaving or going to terminal in severe weather”

The weather had nothing to do with this incident, a failed oil cooler pump was the cause of this. It shows how out of touch with reality Enbridge really is.

“Don’t you just love the garbage spewed by frightened right- wing nut jobs.”

Indeed!

Chock up another public relations failure from the incompetent left. Their bitter disappointment wreaks from every letter they post. You would have thought they would have grown used to it by now.

Such a sad group of commenters on this site lately.

Hey JH- the majority of BC residents are against this project. The harder you deluded conservatives try to spin this idiotic venture, the deeper the hole you are digging for yourselves. Either Trudeau or Mulcair will become the alternative in the next election.

Now THAT would be scary herbster…

You have to admit the coast gaurd response was pathetic for this very average ship.

The auditor general has said for years we are poorly equiped for a marine response.

In the end an american tug saved the day, thats sad.

Not the first time that the Americans came to our aid, and it wont be the last.

As far as the next election goes Mulcair will not be a significant factor.

And if we are dumb enough to vote in Justin Trudeau, then we deserve what we get.

Two super tugs will be with the tankers until they are well on their way.

Two tugs per ship will add another 440 ships to that passage per year. then when weather holds them up, either in or out of port, they will be wanting to push the limits on weather as well as the number of ships in the passage at one time.
Enbridge knows from safety surveys, that it needs to address repairs or replacements on its pipelines but they don’t do it. They rather wait until there is a problem and then they try their darndest to wiggle out of proper clean ups. According to their record, this has become normal company policy.
Of course, once its on the ship, it is no longer their responsibility so who will guarantee the cost of spills at sea? Will all the shipping companies have to pool a multi-billion dollar cleanup fund?. Good luck with that.

Seamut, read the article

herbster..I suggest YOU read the article. It is a typical dipper diatribe being spewed by an insignificant MP who is a member of an irrelevant party. Nothing you quoted is anything but sound bites. The facts are: The ship was in distress 14 KM from shore, which set all the queasy naval gazers into a frenzy. It was eventually towed 46 kms out to sea by the underfunded COAST GUARD. FYI. If the whining left ran shipping in Europe it would be banned from the English Channel as it is 25kms at some points with more traffic than the 401 on a busy day. Oh those white cliffs of dover are really all oil covered. Pfft..whatever. The entire North Sea is one big oil field thanks to those eco warriors in Norway. See many spills out there? Must be lots of pipes and ships and wells IN THE WATER, you think?
Next.

Herbster dishonest ya right. Plans are in constant evolution especially since if the pipeline is built plans and precautions will be finalized closer to an in service date.

Shipping have been in and out of kitimat for decades. Can you find me an incident. I haven’t.

And if we are dumb enough to vote in Justin Trudeau, then we deserve what we get.

That’s exactl7 what we have with Harper at the wheel.
Cheers

Take your concerns back to the government with you and lets hear how loud you can yell…instead of just mumbling here for media attention.
