Police Offer Few Answers on Today’s Attack in Ottawa
Ottawa, B.C- The situation in Ottawa is not over, and police are not saying if they are seeking other suspects in this morning’s shooting.
“All measures are being taken to ensure the safety and security of our residents” that is how Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau opened the news conference to update residents and Canadians on this morning’s attack on Parliament Hill.
He says there were two shooting incidents, one at the war memorial, where a member of the Canadian Armed forces was shot, then another attack on Parliament Hill.
He has confirmed the soldier has died, and the suspect in the Parliament Building has been shot and is dead.
He called for witnesses to contact police with information, and says the investigation is “fluid” and is on going. He would not confirm if there is a second suspect.
RCMP Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud says “This is a dynamic and unfolding situation, I understand people have many questions and we will have answers as they become available.” He says this is the kind of situation police members are trained for “It is important for all Canadians to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to their local police so it can be followed up on.”
He says the attack took them by surprise, but says it’s too early to say how this kind of attack could have unfolded. He also could not say if the suspect who was shot was among the 90 known to have been sympathizers with ISOL.
Canadian Forces Major General Christopher Coates says as a precautionary measure, military personnel working in the National capital region, are being told to stay within their buildings.
Mayor of Ottawa Jim Watson, “Today is a sad and tragic day for our City and our Country”. He expressed condolences to the family of the soldier who lost his life in this morning’s attack “There is no greater pain than losing a loved one”. He says Ottawa has seen and lived through tragedy in the past, “We all want answers, none more than me.” He urged all to think about the person who was killed while standing guard at the war memorial and how he was taken from family and friends.
