IPG to Get Budget Boost

Thursday, October 23, 2014 @ 3:56 AM

Prince George, B.C.- Council has unanimously approved the Initiatives Prince George budget which calls for a  2% lift in the amount  it receives from the City of Prince George.

For 2014, the City provided $1,024,904.00 to IPG,  and  IPG would like  that boosted to $1,045,398.00.

IPG says it is   planning to spend nearly a quarter of a million on advertising in 2015 to  support the Move Up Prince George  campaign and to  launch a new investment  campaign  that will be launched  in 2015.

The Move Up Prince George campaign is garnering a great deal of attention, with hundreds of job openings listed on the site www.moveupprincegeorge.ca

Recently, the Chamber of Commerce published a survey which indicated  its membership was most concerned with  recruitment and retention  of workers.   The numbers of surveys returned cannot be considered statistically significant, as only 72 of the more than 15 hundred Chamber members who were emailed the survey actually completed it for a completion rate of 3.2%.   Mayor Shari Green asked  if  some  people  are  confused thinking  recruitment and retention is something  City Hall should be  undertaking, but  IPG’s CEO, Heather Oland says that is the  work IPG is doing, and IPG is the City of Prince George.

Maybe receiving only a 3.2% return on a survey is indicative of the support IPG has among the businesses in this area. Who knows?

1.025 Million dollars in 2014. Show me some credible value to this, and I may be less skeptical. To date I believe there has been poor return on the taxpayers investment in IPG, and personally feel if it was scrapped, there would be no noticeable change.

I’ve seen over the years how a lot of people in PG complain about IPG and think they aren’t getting good bang for buck. Ok, some years I have thought the same thing myself…..

But I think most people don’t stop to think, “if I ran IPG what would it cost to get something done?” I think as soon as you think about that, then you might not think the money is being wasted.

Just to maintain a website costs thousands. Having something updated all the time like IPG is doing costs just what they say probably about $200K.

I wish them luck with trying to attract people to the City…..it’s a tall order. Afterall, all the other cities in Canada are doing the same thing. The City here needs to clean up the image of PG. Having weeds growing on every sidewalk downtown that are taller than some 4th graders doesn’t help………

Ipg is nothing but job creation in their own building. I say eliminate them. Now they want a raise. And yup city hall will give it to them.

This idea to grow Prince George is just the latest in a number of ventures that IPG was involved in, and to my knowledge none of them make much of a difference.

Part of the problem is that IPG and a number of other organizations have convinced themselves that they have a lot to offer. When what they have is considered next to other Cities like Kamloops, Kelowna, Lower Mainland, and Vancouver Island PG doesn’t come out so good.

So, are we trying to sell a *pig in a poke**??

As an example many people in area’s all across Canada commute to and from Fort McMurray. More live on Vancouver Island and commute to various places. Some of this also takes place in Prince George, so it wont be easy to get people to come to Prince George. We do have a long winter (6months) which really turn people off.

Every major City in BC has been growing with the exception of Prince George. Our population has actually deceased since 2001.

A big part of the problem is the total lack of factual information. Zurowki calling for an increase in the population to 100,000 people is an insult to some people’s intelligence, however that’s part of his campaign. However he really doesn’t have a plan, and even if he did, it wouldn’t work. We need good paying jobs to grow this City, and unfortunately we have lost thousands of jobs in the past 15 years, closed schools, and shut down industry. Unless we can turn that around nothing will change.

I have never seen anyone come up with an intelligent plan to grow the City, so I wait in anticipation.

PS. Should read decreased, not deceased.

IPG doesnt do anything but cost us money… money we cant afford. It has had no impact on PG and time to shut it down. They dont make jobs.. the just cost us. Spending a quarter of a million on advertising is outrageous and is a waste of time… A link to the moveup website should be on the citys webpage and thats is all thats needed to promote the site. Anyone interested in moving to PG will most likely check out the cities web site to see what we have to offer and with a link to the move up page is very cheap.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t I hear Heather Olund say on Global the other night that they had already recruited TWO new employees? Isn’t that wonderful!!?!?!

This isn’t really a simple question to answer but at the end of the day there is only one reason to retain IPG as another tax dollar draw; have they brought enough new business or new residents to Prince George to offset their operating costs with increased property tax revenue? If not, deep six them and let’s put a million dollars into something else.

mytwobits.. so thats fantastic.. so at $500,000 a person it will cost us tax payers around $350,000,000 to fill the 700 positions being advertized on the website.. a bargain if ever there was one…LOL

In the 2013 IPG operating budget, 712,000 in expenses are for wages and benefits. At least IPG has created some high paying jobs within itself.

I know I’ve mentioned this once before, but it’s highly hypocritical of IPG to be bragging about jobs on their site, when they outsourced the MoveUpPG website development to a lower mainland firm. I know of a number of companies that could have handled the project locally.

And since my other post never made it here this morning (copy and pasting a quote from the article is a no-no?) the jobs they quote are placed there through a plug-in to Simply Hired. There’s only 10 actual jobs posted directly to MoveUpPG. The other 700+ can be found anywhere on similar sites lie Eluta, Wowjobs and Indeed.

I guess the question is did IPG put out the website contract tender request to local firms as well as the lower mainland firm, who turned out to win the bid; maybe they were all too busy in PG to do the website, I don’t know. In the US they say ‘Buy American’ (or something along those lines), well, with PG we should be ‘Buying PG’ wherever possible, just my thoughts…

Once again I am going to get on my favorite soapbox. It is NOT the role of tax funded IPG to compete with private recruiting agencies. What are they going to do next? Sell groceries or shoes? IPG needs to stick to their knitting and try to recruit businesses to come to Prince George. What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

IPG is a joke, I haven’t seen nothing get done what people would like to see happen in this down. I hear the city talk of these surveys yet I have personally never seen one, nor has anyone I have mention it to seen one? Again who’s accountable, who monitors successes? Give me $1,024,904.00 and I will hire 10 of my friends we’ll get something happening with this town. Not hard to figure out what this town needs.

– night life.
– outdoor attractions.
– visual appeal.
– advertize the awesome Ski trails.
– advertize Quad trails.
– utilize vacant spaces for RV sites to promote tourism.

Our city parks are a joke, I quit going to them when I had to wade through waste high grass! Why because of cut backs! why to pay for the retarded wage increases the city employees received.
Privatize city jobs, less wages more employees, hence more people living in PG.
When was the last time any of you people visited our museum? correct me here maybe I keep hitting it on an off day but it sure appears to be a daycare more than a museum.

IPG is a glorified taxpayer funded advertising agency which has no accountability or defined metrics for success. I believe one of Shari Green’s campaign promises was to make IPG more accountable, but as far as I can see, that never happened.

All I can say is OMG

If IPG found two new jobs in PG two people must have retired. If employers need employees I am quite sure they are capable of finding someone. I guess it’s not hard to increase the population if you create jobs that IPG has.

Can anyone explaine to me why sherri green should run for a fed position when she didnt do very well as mayor? Is this a reasonable question? Word out there is its rigged. is it?

IPG is in a pretty bad position when even our mayor realizes it is not doing the work it is supposed to be but rather performing work that normally employers and the Chamber perform. Think initiatives Heather not recruitment. Quarter of a million dollars for advertising of a website?

Just wait. Soon Heather Olund will be hiring Shari Green as her personal assistant.
