The Day After
Prince George, B.C. – Canadians are waking up to the day after ‘that’ day, that saw one young man murdered, Parliament put under threat, and a suspect shot to death.
The House of Commons will reconvene today at 10 a.m. Eastern ( 7.a.m. Pacific) as scheduled. That decision coming in the wake of Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying ” Canada will never be intimidated.”
The Prime Minister says the investigation into the suspect will include learning if he had any accomplices.
There are still many questions which remain about yesterday’s attack, not the least of which is how an individual with a firearm made it into the Centre Block of the Parliament building.
We are also learning of how close the gunman was to the room where the Prime Minister and the Conservative caucus were meeting. The Caucus members heard the gun shots in the hallway, and barricaded their meeting room with chairs. The CBC has reported that some members were grabbing flag poles in that room to use as spears should the door be compromised.
The suspect, Michael Zehaf Bibeau had a criminal record in both Quebec and B.C. where he had been convicted of uttering threats. It is known he was ordered to undergo a psychiatric assessment and was found fit to stand trial.
There has been an incredible outpouring of support from other nations. One touching moment had the Pittsburgh Penguins , who were hosting the Philadelphia Flyers, call on all in the arena to stand and join in the singing of the Canadian National Anthem while the ice was bathed in red light highlighted with images of the maple leaf.

Our Prime Minister has been warning us of the danger. Unfortunately the warnings went largely unheeded, only to be made into political hay. Yesterday was a wake up call for all Canadians and are called “To Stand On Guard For Thee” – I’m thankful and really appreciate the leadership of our current Prime Minister Harper and believe he is one of the best PM’s this country has ever had. God keep our Land Glorious and Free!
Names of these shooters, terrorrists, and lunatics should never be made public. There should be no recognition of them at all. Maybe label them as lunatic 1, 2, 3…. or coward or creep, but don’t use their real names.
Wow.. pass me what ever yours smoking Cheetos.. Harper is horrible.. If he was warning us then why didnt he do something about it.. why have unarmed guards ? Ask all the senior citizens how good he is..
I’m with Cheetos on this one.
I am also with Cheetas. I’m proud of our country , leaders and the people that serve and protect. The other two do not have what it takes to lead this country.
Pval you don’t get it do you? If parliament is turned into a fortress it is a sign of weakness just what the Islamic militants want. There has to be a balance between security and freedom.
Islamic militants have to be stopped at our borders and those already here, kicked out. It is time to take the gloves off. Whip it out boy, and I am against everything Mulclair are sorely lacking in any leadership skills in this battle.
seamut did I say make it into a fortress…NO.. I said arm the guards… thats it.. Have you seen numerous attempts to remove undesirables from Canada back to their home countries.. its years and years to get it done if it even ever happens.. havent seen Harper do anything to speed up extradition during his time as PM…
I am also a very proud Canadian.. doesnt mean I have to like the PM.
If they want to leave Canada, do not trap them here by taking away their passports! Let them leave and sacrifice their lives fighting for whatever their ideology is!
Cancel their passports as soon as the plane lands over there!
If one’s house has some poisonous snakes in it and they are trying to get out why would one prevent them from leaving???
He got shot didn’t he.
You forgot one thing: So did one of our soldiers, a single father of a little boy! Had they allowed this known extremist to leave the country as he wanted, the victim would be alive today!
Don’t let it happen again because of illogical government policy!
As tragic as this incident is, the government cannot prevent or anticipate everything bad that’s going to happen. Not without stepping hard on everyone’s individual rights and freedoms.
I also agree with Cheetos first opening comment, 100%
Considering Mulcair’s wimpy response and absolutely anything that Trudeau mutters, I am so thankful for the leadership that we have with Stephen Harper! I might not always agree with everything that our current government does, but I stand behind them.
Seamut, well said as well!!
The ‘terrorists’ for lack of a better word have already won and continue to win. Look at how risk averse and fearful people are nowadays, compared to a few years ago.
Time for changes to be made. I was fortunate to have been born in Canada but that didn’t come without a price my father and Grandfather both paid by serving in world war 1 & 2 because of them I am proud and grateful to call myself a Canadian.
No the terrorists have not won. Instead of treading lightly fearful of hurting some special interests feeling declare war on the radical islamics and treat it as an all out war against them and any related groups.
The radicals take advantage of this pussy footing PC crap and take full advantage of it. Declare war and treat it like an all out war. You liberal, lefty types either get on board or get the hell out of the way.
So I listened to all three major leaders remarks after the tragedy from yesterday and am confused as to why some you above posters are praising Stephen Harper on his great leadership?
All three speeches were virtually identical…the notable exception came from our Prime Minister who vowed to continue to talk tough while hiding behind the USA’s Military…..leadership indeed?
Wonder if we are still exporting wheat, grain and oat to these hostiles? Most likely we are.
Seamut: “No the terrorists have not won. Instead of treading lightly fearful of hurting some special interests feeling declare war on the radical islamics and treat it as an all out war against them and any related groups”
This is genocide you’re advocating. If that’s what you want, you’re part of the problem, not the solution.
Saw a picture on the internet yesterday. Canadian flag..and in the maple leaf it read ” fit in or F%$@ off”. I would rock that as a bumper sticker.

Now Ottawa.
Forget about Islamic jihad and start thinking about mental illness. First, these guys should not have access to guns. Second, there should be much easier ways to get people into asylums.
Krusty Krusty Krusty you don’t get it do you. I am saying let’s quit pussy footing around and declare war on the Islamic state and radical islamist as they have on us.
Get out of the way.
Where did I advocate genocide? You are one confused person. Are you ignoring the atrocities of the Islamic state for some reason?
JB:”Not without stepping hard on everyone’s individual rights and freedoms.”
The government has done an excellent job of identifying 80 or 90 radicalized individuals (without stepping on everyone’s individual rights and freedoms!) who may try to leave Canada and join with certain militants to fight overseas. Let them get lost and never return.
That is a far cry from stepping on everyone’s individual rights and freedoms. Let’s not get carried away!
JB:”The ‘terrorists’ for lack of a better word have already won and continue to win.”
Not in my book!

Maverick 1965, of course they are! One must not discriminate against a whole group of people just because of a few radicalized individuals. I never have and I never will. There are good people and bad people everywhere. Of course we all know that already!
Cheetos, 8, seamut, JB, Maverick, Welllll Said!
Herbster, do you know that you can buy a gun in any major town in Canada, any kind you want? Very easy, and they don’t discriminate if you’re off the wall a little.
Very sad to hear of our young soldiers deaths, should not have happened
but it has.
I understand they were not allowed to have live rounds in their firearms while guarding a national monument. Sure hope that policy changes. Also see the day coming when every soldier is armed with a sidearm at all times.
@princegeorge your idea brings to mind a young man named Omar Khadr….

Isn’t about time concealed carry was legal?? The Sergeant at Arms in Ottawa is a clear demonstration on how to save lives.
“Also see the day coming when every soldier is armed with a sidearm at all times.”
You’ll never see that.
Lets accept thousands of Syrian refugees into Canada. Yeah right!

Having my comments deleted leaves me to be-leave that I have less rights to express my feeling even though I was born here and proud to call myself a Canadian. Leaves me to question intentions even though statistics prove otherwise. “Shaking head” go figure?

No it doesn’t. This is a private website and the administrators can delete any comment they see fit. If you’re looking for the ‘right’ to say whatever you want, start your own blog.
Yeah good point J.B. I guess I got a little to emotional. Thanks for bring back to reality.
Concealed weapons would not have saved te soldier in Ottawa- he was shot in the back. And how did a homeless person get a gun anyway? I really doubt more guns is going to make our society any more peaceful.
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/09/mass-shootings-investigation
let’s look at some facts gathered in a five-month investigation by Mother Jones.
MoJo’s map, timeline, and analysis of 30 years of mass shootings in America.
In the wake of the massacres this year at a Colorado movie theater, a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, we set out to track mass shootings in the United States over the last 30 years. We identified and analyzed 62 of them, and one striking pattern in the data is this: In not a single case was the killing stopped by a civilian using a gun. And in other recent (but less lethal) rampages in which armed civilians attempted to intervene, those civilians not only failed to stop the shooter but also were gravely wounded or killed. Moreover, we found that the rate of mass shootings has increased in recent years—at a time when America has been flooded with millions of additional firearms and a barrage of new laws has made it easier than ever to carry them in public places, including bars, parks, and schools.
