Oil Kings Down Cougars

Sunday, October 26, 2014 @ 3:45 AM

Saturday night in Edmonton, the Prince George Cougars dropped a 5-1 score to the Edmonton Oil Kings. Edmonton erased a 1-0 deficit with five unanswered goals, including three in the second period. Luke Bertolucci scored twice for the home side while Jari Erricson notched his team high 10th of the season for Prince George.

The first 20 minutes were solid for the Cougars who outshot the Oil Kings 9-8, and outscored them 1-0. After setting a physical tone early, the Cougars would eventually be rewarded offensively. Jari Erricson forced a puck free in the high slot, out-waited the defense and then roofed a wrist shot up over the blocker of Tristan Jarry for his 10th goal of the season. Erricson’s goal marked the 12th time in 15 games this season that the Cougars have scored the first goal.

Early in the second though, Edmonton responded with a power play marker. Dyson Mayo’s point shot found it’s way past Ty Edmonds and in for his second goal of the season, and the home side continued pushing.

Mitchell Walter put Edmonton ahead 2-1 at 16:16 of the second and Edgars Kulda added to the lead in the final minute on a power play to give the Oil Kings a 3-1 advantage through two periods. Edmonton outshot the Cougars 21-8 in the second.

To their credit, the Cougars responded with some urgency in period three, but Tristan Jarry kept the door shut, turning aside all 11 Cougar opportunities fired his way.

Luke Bertolucci would strike twice in a 25 second span late in the third for Edmonton to secure a 5-1 victory for his team.

Prince George went zero-for-six on their power play chances, while the Oil Kings finished two-for-four. The final shot total favored the Oil Kings: 35-28.

For the Cougars it was their fourth consecutive defeat, and pushes their record to 7-8. Their three-game, three-night road trip wraps up Sunday in Calgary at the Saddledome.
