Prince George BC- There’s a new flight service  from Prince George .

Pacific Coastal Airline will be offering a direct flight between Prince George and Victoria.

The flights will be daily and will start in January. The flight cost will start at $140 one way.

This is the first time Pacific Coastal has ventured this far into the interior.  It is a move Rosalind Thorne of the Prince George Construction Association says is timed perfectly “With the number of projects proposed for the north this direct flight will be welcomed by those proponents.”

The flights will start January 12th and will be daily outbound from PG around  7 in the evening and leaving Victoria for PG around 5 pm.

I was hoping for Edmonton. I would expect there to be greater demand for that connection.

IMHO There should be a direct flight from Prince George to Fort Mac.

Looks like they operate a fleet of small prop-based aircraft, similar to Central Mountain Air. Hopefully they can make a go of it.

As much as Edmonton would be nice, I should also applaud the airport authority in attracting a new airline and diversifying our opportunities. Good work.

I travel to Edmonton 5 to 6 times a year on business. I typically drive because it’s faster. Dont let the posted 5 hour’s flight time via Vancouver fool you. The schedule goes like this… Drive to Airport in PG, wait for departure, fly to Vancouver, wait for flight to Edmonton, Arrive and secure tranportation to city (30kms). By the time you get there your 9+ hours with or without traffic.

Awesome news for Prince George. Hopefully a few more destinations and Prince George will earn the right to call itself an international airport, which will hopefully inspire growth.

Yes! I have immediate family in Victoria and make a trip about twice a year, usually. This is incredible news for me personally. I’ve flown with Pacific Coastal many times, usually a return trip from Vancouver to Powell River. Good airline but only smaller planes. I would be very interested to know what type of aircraft they plan to use for this run. If it’s really small, it could be a long flight with lots of cancellations during winter months. But I’m very optimistic about this!

adding to my original comment — looks like they have a 30-seat Saab 340A which would be a decent aircraft for this flight. I’ve only ever flown on their smaller Beechcraft which is what I was picturing and worried about. Looking forward to hearing more!

$140…. wow, you can’t drive there for that. Good deal.

This is kind of bad news for PG. Instead of growing the city with the workforce required for all those projects she’s noted, we’re going to ship the workers in from out of town.

axman, increasing infrastructure and promoting an ease to travel is never a bad things for PG. More connections means more viability, and makes PG more of a central location.

Trust Axman to see the negative in EVERYTHING!

How bout instead of flying to pg lets get some flights to edm ft Mac. Ft St john n grande prairie. This way people can live in pg and still go to work. ???

Timing seems pretty good considering the Winter Games are in February. Wonder if the service will continue after the games.??

Just think of what would happen to the industry in this town if there was a direct flight to Fort mac. The Pulpmills, husky, peroxychem, marcelux and more would lose all their tradesmen and experienced operators to the slick. It would kill PG. They people we have lost already to the big money is having an impact on our city. It’s not realistic to think these companies can pay the same wages and stay in business.

P Val. Your assuming that there would be jobs for all these people in Ft Mac. I doubt that that would be the case, however I agree that we would lose some jobs.

There are other areas in BC and across Canada that have direct flights to Ft Mac, and have had for some time. Some as far away as Toronto.

I suspect that there are a lot of people who presently live in the greater Prince George area already work in Ft Mac. and have been for quite some time.

If oil prices continue to drop, Ft Mac will be downsizing and there will be plenty of people available for the jobs that remain.

Palopu I know we would lose LOTS of people to,the slick.. Ft Mac downsizing..lol. That’s funny. I know quite a few people working there that fly back to PG now. I also work with lots that would consider going to the slick if there are direct flights as flying to edm or cal then to pg chews up a lot of time on your day off.

If you knew all the expansions going on in the Mac and surrounding area right now you would understand the need for workers.. But guess you don’t.

I was merely summarizing the story,

“…Rosalind Thorne of the Prince George Construction Association says is timed perfectly “With the number of projects proposed for the north this direct flight will be welcomed by those proponents.”

People are going to live on the Island and fly up for the jobs then fly home to spend their money. That’s really not much of a boon for PG.

Yes axman, because we all know that there’s a huge group of workers in Victoria just waiting for a flight to PG so they can take our jobs. Look up the meaning of proponent. Wow

Do you really think people would leave a job that allows them to come home every night for a job that takes them 2 weeks away from their love ones? I could only see single guys or soon to be single guys. $50,000 extra a year isn’t worth that risk!

pro·po·nent
noun \prə-ˈpō-nənt, ˈprō-ˌ\

: a person who argues for or supports something

Given the choice between living in PG and working in camp versus living on the Island and working in camp what do you think the choice will be?

Maverick… The answer is yes. The schedule most are now on is 7 on 7 off. It’s also just not the immediate pay raise but the yearly bonuses, the great retirement packages as well. It’s actually cheaper to fly in and out than buy a house there.

P Val. All I’m saying is that if the price of oil continues to drop, oil from the tar sands becomes to expensive, and things start to slow down. Surely you don’t dispute that.

axman, Not only have you misinterpreted what Ms Thorne said, your argument to support your initial statement of “This is kind of bad news for PG” is not based on any fact and is simply wrong.

Palopu: Many oil related projects such as upgrades, expansions etc. that have been planned for next year are currently being dropped or at least shelved for now. This is not just in the patch but everywhere. You are bang on. PVal, maybe the word “downsizing” may not have been the best word but it is happening already. Capital projects and expansions in this industry are subject to the same forecasts and planning as any other industry. While we are not at the point of massive layoffs, a lot of plans are being put on hold.

Certainly wouldn’t be my first choice neither would for the guys I work around. General conversation during lunch hour the topic has come up and as a group we all felt very fortunate to have a job that allows us to be home with our families every night. Can’t take it with you when you go and you can’t buy dreams, memories or happiness P Val!
