Snow Removal Budget Gets Green Light
Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has approved the snow removal draft budget for 2015.
Council has said yes to increasing the snow levy to increase that budget from $5.8 million to $6.3 million dollars. That should be enough to cover the costs of snow removal throughout 2015, and, hopefully, a little left over to replenish a reserve that has been drained.
Councillor Brian Skakun says “The community expectations are high, and we have nowhere to go but up.” He was making a reference to the snow removal problems of last winter which left many residents angry over the lack of service.
In addition to improved snow removal procedures, there will be a communications strategy to keep residents informed on policies and procedures. That strategy will include updates on the City’s website outlining where crews will be working on any given day.
This year, the City will be running three full shifts for sidewalk clearing as two sidewalk machines have been rented for the season.
The City has signed up with a weather forecasting system which provides updates every 5 hours, and road sensors have been repaired and are working.
The City will have two more graders and 3 additional front end loaders in service this winter.
There is still about $1.3 million left in the 2014 snow removal budget, but Director of Public Works, Bill Gaal says it is expected that budget will be eaten up between now and the end of December, finishing the year about $400 thousand over budget.
Gaal says even if that remaining budget is used, the snow removal will continue, with the extra amount taken from surplus.

No consideration for privatization? Perfect time considering what we were told by the “high paid” consultant about the state of the aging equipment. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around our snow removal reserve being drained and possibly over budget by $400 thousand? With the state of our roads last year?
Bill Gaal should be in question.
A budget is just that a budget but the snowy weather is always unpredictable and could break the newly increased budget. Surprisingly that didn’t happen last year.
I have often wondered why Victoria street was only plowed from Milburn on south to Ford, when from 20th to Milburn was nearly impassable. That really doesn’t make any sense.
Ross Crescent and McBride are priority 2 but with the Simon Fraser seniors home on Laurier an Elizabeth Fry home, another care home, parking for the cancer centre and the Emergency entrance on Lethbridge just off Laurier and no priority at all? and how about 13th going up from Winnipeg to the Emergency, no priority? Dumb, dumb, dumb. Yes I know 13th gets a little help, it being one of the hills often attended to but it can be treacherous at times in spite of that.
I have seen lots of cars spun out on Carney, going up from Massey too. Often these hills are not gotten to quickly enough. Often they are just sanded too, on top of the unplowed snow.
A sand truck, with a plow but with it in the air, sanding on top of snow that isn’t plowed, sort of epitomizes the snow clearing operations in this city.
Get rid of Bill Gaal. He is the biggest problem with PG’s snow removal. Beth James should also be shown the way out of City Hall because of her total incompetence. The Province got rid of her, we should too!!!
How many of these news releases from City Hall are only posturing for the 2015 games? Council is also trying to put on a show for the 2015 games. Most of the present Council will be gone after the election of November 15. I predict that only Hall and Skakun will remain.
Headline should read. “Best snow removal pg will ever have for two weeks”. Then back to horrible.
Honestjoe. I doubt your prediction will be right. We certainly do not need to try and run the next four years, with 7 New Councilors, and Skakun.
We need sufficient Councilors to give Hall the support he would need to get things done, and to bring in some changes. The Councilors that worked closely with him in the last year of this term were. Skakun, Krause, Frizzell, and Everitt. So we should keep these guys on board. Those who caused the most grieve were Stolz, and Wilbur, who consistently voted with Mayor Green. Odd man out was Koehler. So we should vote in perhaps three newbies.
In my opinion, throwing them all out would be chaotic and serve no usful purpose, however throwing out a few sends a message. We could always throw out some more in 2019 if need be.
The next Council elected needs to hit the ground running, and we need some experience.
Would be interesting to hear who the best **new** Councilors would be.
Any suggestions??
Lyn Hall has been our mayor for the past year since he is the leader of the majority of the votes. How has that worked for us? I certainly don’t like the green gang but Lyn for mayor….. Doesn’t have my vote. He is too much like our previous disaster Dan Rogers. I remember that most of the current group voted for tax increases. It’s only as we get close to the election that they have spoken up or out. I agree we don’t need to change them all but we do need new blood.
I say we try having no mayor or councillors.. First off it would save us over $300,000 a year. Second. We would actually see what our over paid people in city hall do for us. Would see how much the higher ups we pay way to much for do for us.
Would put the focus on where it needs to be.. The actual people in charge. Not the useless puppets we have Ina mayor and council. James has to be dancing every night knowing green is her minion and the most hated person in PG while James runs the city.
Time to hold people accountable for their actions and prove to us why they deserve the wages they get.
oneup482 I don’t know how you figure rogers was a disaster, he at least was up front with his views and whether you like it or not he got things done. If it wasn’t for him the winter games wouldn’t be coming to PG and all the improvements to the kin centre and other sports facilities wouldn’t be happening. He also knew that snow removal had to be a priority and he was also able to keep stolz and greene in check when they both wanted to cut the snow budget. The real disaster occurred last election when far too many bought into the spin that our current mayor and her cronies were putting out.
The question now is can we believe Hall or Zurowski? Neither of them has shown must depth beyond the rhetoric and spin to appeal to the masses but then again maybe they realized after watching greene win last time that it pays to say anything to get elected because you can do what the hell you want once in are in power.
Maverick please expand on how you figure privatization is the answer?
Maybe the city should ask for some of that carbon tax back.
Hall for Mayor, didn’t he just vote to spend more on a broken snow removal system. Why don’t we see if all the great recommendations we paid for have helped before we flush even more money down the drain.
Pal, why would you want to keep Krause? If we want more homeless coming here then by all means keep him, but I certainly don’t want more taxes to pay for everyone from other towns coming here to live.
