Plug Pulled on Northern Lights Festival

Prince George, B.C.- The plug has been pulled on the Northern Lights Festival for this year.
The event, which first lit up Connaught Hill Park in the winter of 2007, has been coordinated by Tourism Prince George and the City helped out by providing in kind support by storing, installing and maintaining the light displays, as well as clearing the snow from the Connaught Hill roadway.
Tourism Prince George has advised the City it will no longer be involved with organizing or operating this event. That notice came less than a month ago, .
The City says with its focus on the Canada Winter Games, there just isn’t enough time or staff availability to take over the event.

Well I guess the question that begs to be asked is. Why is Tourism Prince George no longer involved with organizing or operating this event? Doesn’t make sense to me and probably a lot of citizens of Prince George, as to why a facet of the city’s governance (Tourism) is not involved in something that has potential to promote tourism in Prince George?
I’m with you on that one Cheetos, however, perhaps Tourism Prince George is too busy getting ready for the Winter Games. Would be nice if there was another group that could step up and operate it, if even in a different location. A lot of money was spent building those lights, and I would hope they could still be put to some good use!
I am confused, the city already stores, installs, maintains the lights plus does all the plowing of the area… What else is there? Telling them what time to do it and where? Or coordinating and helping setup and plugging in? Or maybe providing security of the site?
Would be nice if they had it up and running for the Winter Games
Can’t believe that everyone at the city is to busy , that is a shocker . Too bad such a beautiful event to bright such colour and brightness at a time when the season is so dark .
Mackenzie Drive is much better anyway. And it’s free…
Tourism Prince George now gets their funding through the Hotel Tax, and therefore are guaranteed a certain amount each year. They no longer have to rely just on the City for funding, so they can now pick and chose what they want to do.
The City is busy because of the Winter Games, and they don’t want anything to go wrong to ruin their image. (Hmmmm What image)
I agree with JohnnyBelt. Mackenzie Drive is much better, done by local citizens, and at no cost to taxpayers. What more could you ask for.
The Northern Lights Festival was probably an unadmitted failure.
With the new civic center plaza it would look nice it have a few of the lights set up there
How long have we known about the winter games? Not to mention how long we have know about the impending Christmas season.. Would have nice to have been given a bit longer notice if they had no intention of doing them, someone else maybe could have stepped up.
@jho
You mean like Candy Cane Lane?
