Torch Relay Illuminates Canada Games Plaza
Prince George, B.C.- The first leg of the Illuminate the North Torch Relay is in the books.
It kicked off at 5:00 tonight at the YMCA of Northern BC and wrapped up at 7:00 at the newly minted Canada Games Plaza as part of the games 100 day out celebration.
Over 1,000 people packed the plaza to see Canada Winter Games alumnus and Olympic champion Catriona Le May Doan hand off the torch to 93 year old Lheidli T’enneh elder Mary Gauchie.
In a short speech Gauchie wished all athletes the “best of luck in their events” and commended them on their “commitment and dedication.”
The 100 day out celebration also featured entertainment, vendors, and will be capped off with fireworks at 8:30.
After tonight Illuminate the North heads to Fort St. John November 22nd, Terrace December 6th, and Quesnel January 17th.

I attended the celebrations down at the new plaza, and was surprised to find myself emotional and excited about these Games after all. I think they will be an amazing boost to the Prince George economy, and I hope we can pull them off in a way that will make the rest of Canada know that this city is a great place to live.
I agree! It was great to see some civic pride! I’m excited to welcome Canada to our home.
