I am looking forward to the games.

A huge opportunity for our community and the entire region!

As am I. It will be great to watch some of the comps.

A huge opportunity for what exactly? To throw $6million into a deep dark hole?

Seems like the Bulkley Valley is not too involved and excited in the games. I used to live in PG and am excited myself.

Sine Nomine, we pay taxes to provide health services. We pay taxes to provide education services. We pay taxes to provide police, fire and ambulance services. We pay taxes for roads, snow removal, water and sewer. We pay taxes for more things than we are able to shake a stick at!

We provide for those that are in need, we provide for those that are homeless, we provide for the mentally ill, we even provide for those that are too lazy to get a job.

Take a drive through downtown and what do you see? Offices and Agencies for this, that and absolutely every other thing!

I do my absolutely very best to NOT NEED any of this vast array of public services that my taxes help pay for! But at the same time, I don’t think that 100% of my taxes should go to fund things that I try not to need or use.

Every once in a while (and it’s not very often), I deserve to have some of my taxes spent on something that I will actually enjoy! So, I intend to enjoy the Canada Games, just as I enjoyed the Olympics!!

@sine

O dear sine, what can I say to you?

Just look at what has happened for other communities when they hosted the games. Winter or summer, doesn’t matter.

The economic impact far exceeds the tax payer contribution. Not too mention all the stuff that will attract world class athletes here in the future.

THINK of the possibilities.

Very well said Hart Guy!

There will be no economic impact to the City of Prince George because of these games. Some money will be made by the hotel, restaurant, and bars. However the retail industry will lose money. Most of the infrastructure will be paid for by tax dollars. Don’t forget that we paid an additional $15 Million in taxes in the last five years, to cover some of the costs for infrastructure etc;

Once the games are over and everyone clears out, you will not hear another word about these games. In fact they are not even scheduled to return to BC (Winter or Summer Games) for over 20 years. So it will be sometime after 2035 that they come back this way.

In the meantime every City that hosts them will be talking about all the benefits that they will bring to their City. Check out Whitehorse Yukon and Grande Prairie Alberta, and see if they had any long term benefits from hosting the games. Some infrastructure buildings, and that’s about it.

For those who want to run around for two weeks trying to watch all the different sports, enjoy yourself, and have fun, but don’t try and convince people that these games will have any long term effect, because they wont.
