Election Message at High School Tournament Angers Some
Prince George, B.C. – Some parents attending a weekend volley ball tournament in Prince George feel they were on the wrong side of a spiked ball when a team showed up wearing t-shirts carrying an election message.
The Duchess Park Junior Girls ‘black” team was warming up on the court, wearing t-shirts that carried the message “Vote Zurowski”.
“These girls are just 15 years old” said one parent who called 250News to complain, “They aren’t old enough to vote, and shouldn’t have been used as election billboards”.
Don Zurowski is a candidate for Mayor in Prince George. He says his campaign team supplied the t-shirts only after all of the parents of the volleyball team members had consented to their daughters wearing the shirts.
But parent consent may not have been enough.
School District 57 Superintendent Brian Pepper says there are policies about the supply and use of donated materials and about rights and responsibilities of employees. “There are three policies which butt up against this type of activity” says Pepper who identifies the policies as:
- 1170.3 the rights and responsibilities of employees
- 1323 which covers donations and sponsorships and
- 1660 which deals with school partnerships.
Superintendent Pepper says a partnership that would see a team wearing a supplied t-shirt should have been arranged through the principal’s office “There are policy and contractual implications and I am looking into it.”

Looks like a sign of desperation.
Don Zurowski
I see nothing has changed…..
well nothing has change with me either…
didn’t vote for you last time and I can’t see this time being any different…
Will your storm off again when you lose?
Poor taste. Nice try Don. Maybe next year.
May not have been the best approach for Don to advertise but what is the difference from this and what the teachers did. Countless times I saw Children standing on picket lines, holding signs that made remarks towards the Provincial Government. These kids were younger than 15 years old, yet they are out supporting something that they know nothing about.
Gives us a good look at the caractor of don. Try a little congeniality Don.
It was a weekend tournament; what Pepper has to say about it is irrelevant.
Oh please. You folks bitch when the younger generation doesn’t get involved in local politics, but when they do, you bitch that it was a slimy move by a politician you don’t like? Make up your minds.
Even if they are only 15, they still have a vested interest in the future of this city, and who runs it. It’s their future too, not just yours. I say good for them, whether it was a Zurowski T-shirt or a Lyn Hall Tuque.
I believe it was Hall that started the t-shirt advertising craze this year unfortunately. You will be seeing a lot more of this in the future. Free t-shirts instead of signs.
This is no different than the teachers having kids at their picket lines and rallies supporting them. Where was the outcry when this was happening?
No different than the support staff union posting on FirstClass(school’s website) who they would like to elect for Mayor/councillors/school board trustees.
everyone is entitled to their opinions on this,
some for it
some not…
none of us are wrong….
see life is all about choices
Absolutely this is different! Those kids are minors, and I know as a fact that the parents were NOT informed of this plan! I know this as my good friends son was subjected to wearing the shirt at the direction of the coach/teacher! This is just plain wrong! Apparently the coach of the women’s team is a relation to Don! Those teachers need to be disciplined. Your lucky it wasent my kid mrZurowski!
Schools are public institutions and should not have been used for advertising. slinky and tdguy, what people do on their own time is their business. I also believe first-class is not open to the public to access.
cheers
Ride-on, would you/parents be just as offended if the “minor” was wearing a Budweiser baseball hat?
People need to find something more important to belly-ache about.
I do not agree with this coach’s decision. Was Zurowski aware this was being done or was it someone else’s bright idea? On the flip side though, kids wear t-shirts and jerseys all the time that have a sponsor’s name on it. Is that viewed as support for that sponsor or business? Not usually…it just means someone else paid for it.
As for the age of the kids…..they might not be old enough to vote in the election but they are old enough to vote for candidates in a political party.
Were the children informed of the platforms of each candidate, then given the opportunity to decide for themselves which candidate to wear a shirt for? If they were not, then this is inappropriate.
“subjected to wearing a t-shirt” OMG call the cops somebody must pay!!! seriously get a life.
Don keep up the good work and lets hope Prince George hires you to do the job, we don’t need another Dan Rogers style mayor!
The story says it was a girls volleyball team. Ride-On says her friends son was directed to wear the shirt. How many teams were wearing the shirts?
Pylot says it. move on folks… actually this may be good for the kids to see what a bunch of cry-babies we are.
You don’t like it vote for Hall and then we can carry on with having Sherri Green 2.0 for the next 3 years.
Pretty sure Lynn had minors wearing his shirts at the hockey game the other week. Geez, whichever Lynn supporter called 250 news should get the stick out of her butt and stop playing dirty.
Much ado about nothing. Love the faux outrage.
Meh, I just need some rags for the shop floor. Where do you get the free shirts ?
Can’t vote for either candidate, but was overwhelmed with Hall propaganda at the Nov 2nd hockey game. Was approached several times by Hall supporters and just about had to beat them off with a stick. Were the kids up up the stands trying to solicitate votes like the Hall crew. Neither is right, but one was getting in the face of people wanting to enjoy a family day, the other wasn’t.
So we have two NOTHINGS to vote for…..
Bitching about freedom of expression and choice on remeberrance day.. such class..
2 pathetic candidates this year. Where is Fetterly when you need him? He wouldn’t do this.
bcracer:”…see life is all about choices”
Well said, especially on this day!
Creative marketing! Go Don go!
Good for Zurowski, a good way to start getting our youth interested in the running of our city. Engage them I say. Just last week, Hall had his people standing kitty corner from the School Board Building, at the intersection of Highway 16 and Ferry Avenue. People on both sides of the Highway, seeking to gather support for Hall, during 07:45 rush hour. There is enough accidents at that intersection without the distractions of people waving and wearing lime green shirts saying vote for Hall. Talk about poor taste and lack of common sense.
Believe both Hall and Zurowski supporters who went with t-shirt idea would have been careful to have parent permission. bcracer – life is about choices, lucky we live in Canada. Northman, thank you for keeping the meaning of today, what our relatives fought so hard for in the front of discussion.
I personally think that is fantastic that even though they are too young to vote they are taking part of the really important issues….beats Survivor and any other reality TV. I would be proud of my son for wearing a t-shirt that make people think about what is going on around them, what is really important. Hall or Zuroski, either way they are being informed and sharing that. Lets keep talking about the things that matter!
At 15 parents should be informing their children, and allowing them to make those decisions on their own. Seriously. Stop bubble wrapping start teaching and preparing. I would like to see political science become mandatory in the classroom curriculum.
“my good friends son was subjected to wearing the shirt at the direction of the coach/teacher”
OMG. Really? SUBJECTED to? Gee I hope he isn’t scarred for life
Ps – was just looking over pictures of my grandfather who lied about his age and went overseas to war when he was 15. I suspect he would have a good chuckle to see this whining about a tshirt. Lol
Extremely disappointed with the comments today regarding this. We all talk about having our youth more engaged with their local community so we can ensure out succession plan is in place for the future of Prince George. Yet, when our youth do something, as is highlighted in this piece, we turn into hypocrites and say it’s not right because the parents should be controlling the decision?? We want our youth to be independent and think for themselves but the comments by PG Ride and 8 sounds like the complete opposite of this. Classy. I would suggest we focus on the substance of what our candidates are presenting, not who wore a simple T-shirt at a volleyball tournament.
Agree taxednmaxed, Hall and Zurowski parents should be proud for involving their kids in the process. Maybe someday they will care to vote.
Superintendent Pepper’s comment “a partnership that would see a team wearing a supplied t-shirt should have been arranged through the principal’s office “There are policy and contractual implications and I am looking into it.”
Three policies mentioned have absolutely nothing to do with a team wearing t-shirts with writing on them. What school were they at?
1170.3 Rights & Responsibilities of Employees; maintaining high standards of conduct is essential in meeting the expectations of students, parents and the community.
1323 School Parent Advisory Councils; work with the PAC when general issues and concerns affecting students, parents and the school are identified and brought forward.
1660 School partnerships only for ongoing partnerships if of significant enough scope to be covered by this policy should the principal of the school consult with an Asst Superintendant
http://www.sd57.bc.ca/Policies/Policies/Pages/default.aspx
Look forward to clarification because we have sponsored school teams over the years, had the company logo on warm up shirts that I believe these t-shirts would be used for. Been allowed to hang company banners. There was no outcry or refusal of support by the parents that then paid less for team expenses. Will the schools soon be banning any clothing that has wording on it?
Good grief, who cares already? I shudder to think what an adult who is eligible to vote gets up to when they aren’t being influenced by a child’s t-shirt in an inconsequential municipal election, but I don’t let it keep me up nights either.
I saw a middle-aged man with a “vote for Lyn Hall” t-shirt stretched over his barrel-shaped belly at a downtown restaurant last week. He looked like a buffoon and I certainly took notice, but it didn’t influence me in any way except for a solemn wish that people would behave in a more dignified way.
I am disgusted!
Here is where the problem is. Not all the students or their parents support Don Zurowski. So now you teach the kids that politics is a dictatorship and to hell with democracy. Don Zurowski has made it clear the rules can be broke for his agenda and this is his leadership style. The principle did not indorse this promotion of Don Zurowski but he feels special enough that the rules only apply to others. That is the type of Mayor that just left office.
Today is about remembering all the people fought and died for democracy.
happy13: “Today is about remembering all the people fought and died for democracy.”
Bingo. I wonder what some of those people would think about a t-shirt issue? It’s sad that people called the media because of it.
Nice comments, Sine Nomine???? Is it an inconsequential municipal election because you are not running. Hmmmm… I suspect noone would vote for you anyway. You may have style but no manners.
Who cares really?
We’re the kids forced into working for peanuts at a dangerous sweat shop to make the t shirts?
That would be a crime. But no one would care.

Whether you’re pro-Hall or pro-Zurowski, like or don’t like this whole t-shirt thing, you’ve got to admit it is an awesome opportunity to start a dialogue with our youth. Personally, if one of my kids wore one of those shirts, regardless of whom I supported I would want to know why he was willing to publicly endorse a candidate. A great chance to engage my kids at the dinner table.
YES FOSTER_07! My thoughts exactly!
Today we as people of pg have not shown our best side. Don made a mistake. OK.
After next Saturday we have to sell, we have great people here and we do, have great people.
I know that everyday when I go shopping or need help. You are there. Thank you for that.
Neither side has shown their best today, on a day when we should.
Don and Lyn all the best.
To all the veterans, thank you, past and present.
@happy13 perhaps you need to reread the article. It states the parents were asked so now there is no problem.
Slinky: Prince George, B.C.
Further more we get enough election propaganda on the drive to the game.
A few years ago at the middle school in Fort Nelson the volleyball coach had t-shirts made up for the team. They were called the FUBARS. When a parent asked the coach if she knew what that meant and she didn’t everyone had a good laugh. The farther north you get the less prissy people seem to be. Apparently PG isn’t that far north. ☻
happy13, Hall supporters did feel on the wrong side of a spiked ball at a 15yr old volley ball tournament. Cougar fans felt on the wrong side of the puck when the Hall brigade showed up, little children in tow with their shirts on. Zurowski fans didn’t call the fashion police or 250News about the poor kids. To make them wear such a garment in public. Seems if parents ok what kids wear, let them wear it.
Hilarious how a t-shirt can get more comments than a real issue. So, should we talk about candidate’s hair cuts or color. Really!!
@happy13 “He says his campaign team supplied the t-shirts only after all of the parents of the volleyball team members had consented to their daughters wearing the shirts”
They asked the parents of the students wearing the t-shirt as far as I can tell

“Here is where the problem is. Not all the students or their parents support Don Zurowski.”
If (you expect) ALL the parents and students in attendance to support a brand, then maybe one doesn’t support Nike brand because of sweat shop workers – does that mean that noone can wear a Nike ball cap, or Nike sweats, or Nike t-shirt to the game?
Someone from Lynn Hall’s campaign team called me at home. I really, really, really dislike Lyn Hall and his smug arrogance. I should have called the news to express my outrage. :)
But it was easier just to tell him I’d rather gouge my eyes out than vote for Hall.

“Schools are public institutions and should not have been used for advertising. slinky”
Au contraire, didn’t see you dissin’ me or would have added it to happy’s reply – SD57 has policies on advertising, that is what pepper was getting at. However this is not equipment, nor is it a uniform so those policies do not apply. Any kid can go to school in a Hall t-shirt or Zurowski t-shirt, or even a Megadeath t-shirt as t-shirts are not inappropriate unless of course they show too much skin but I don’t think that was the case here. If a group of kids in the stands wore the t-shirt would there have been an outcry? My guess is yes, the Hall camp would cry foul.
Athletes MUST however wear the school uniform while playing a game, but while practicing they can wear anything “appropriate”
axman. Your posts are so bland. Did you ever consider exaggerating a bit.???
As I said earlier. If those people wearing the t-shirts had approached the Principle of the school they would not have been allowed to wear them.
Anyone notice that there are no big campaign posters, or people setting up desks in the mall?? That is because the merchants and mall owners don’t want to be seen as supporting a particular politician, and do not allow politicking in the mall.
So the t-shirt extravaganza was a flop. Probably lost more votes than it gained.
All I can say is wow.
That’s right folks, you can advertise Nike, Red Bull, Sons of Anarchy and vulgarity on your shirts, but not a candidate for mayor. lol. What a pile of hypocrites these parents are.

No need to exaggerate. Was that you on the phone? When you phone me at my home to shill for your candidate don’t call me rude when I politely tell you to piss off.
The replay of the mayoral candidates forum is on CKPG right now. I know it doesn’t mean anything but it sounds funny that Don wants to get PG growing and he doesn’t live in PG.
Digitus, were you watching cartoons or the debate?? Both Hall and Zurowski are long time residents within the Prince George City limits
As to the points before….yes why no outcry to the kids at the cougars game wearing bright yellow Lynn Hall shirts. People are way too sensitive these days.
The name of the election game is getting your name in the news! Judging by the 60 comments response it worked for the candidate whose name was on the shirts!
Expect more of that kind of campaigning! Quite frankly it is a tempest in a tea pot!
Zena….your right, I’m wrong. I did not correctly hear Don’s answer. Don Z lives in the city. My bad.
Put sparks and brownies in such banners as they deliver cookies door to door. NOT…
Digitus – you good for even watching the debate.
super dave…..scarrie is not running
Foster the youth
Pylot Project you nailed it perfectly on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 @ 7:35 AM .
Much ado about nothing.
Hey, I thought that Pepper dude was retired from the school district, whats he doing making comments? Acting superintendent?
To boot, he is running for office as a P.G. councillor.
Prediction: elect Pepper and be prepared for him to be preaching Roberts Rules of order to the other councillors and mayor.
On an unrelated matter; please respect our military, past and present.
metalman.
There is no such thing as bad publicity. His publicity manager got people talk more about him by this. It works in Hollywood, but I don’t know about PG election.
Skakun asked on Facebook what people thought of this and later regretted it, removing the post after it got out of hand.. All this fuss over t-shirts, people love an excuse to be outraged.
