Prince George, B.C. – Chilly temperatures did not deter a huge crowd from turning out for this morning’s Remembrance Day ceremony at the Prince George Civic Centre.

Among the participants were modern day soldiers, veterans from World War II, Korea, and from Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

MLA Shirley Bond and MP Bob Zimmer spoke of the recent tragic events in Ottawa and Quebec which brought tears to the eyes of many in attendance.

The standing room only crowd included Shane Hartley who attends every year with his young son Logan.

“I brought my son because he’s got to learn why we celebrate Remembrance Day. To remember all the soldiers who have served our country.”

Local Air Force veteran Neil Boyes served Canada for 22 years, including many places overseas, and was amazed by the large turnout.

“It does my heart wonders when I see this.”

He also spoke of the challenges local veterans face.

“It’s very hard to transition back into a regular civilian pattern of life and we face an awful lot of challenges.”

Boyes says that includes the loss of camaraderie with other soldiers and the federal government’s decision to shut down the veterans offices in the area.

“So in order for us to get any services you have to go down to Vancouver.”

And as 250 News learned yesterday there was also a heavier than usual police presence outside the Civic Centre to handle security.

Yup good thing they brought the extra security.
Those 80+ year old war vets can get out of hand if the rim rations aren’t managed properly

*rum not rim

Also noticed RCMP with binoculars on the roof of the parkade beside the Ramada. Despite the unfortunate need for this, it was a beautiful ceremony on an even more beautiful day. Lest we forget.

Wish we didn’t need it, but very glad they were there.

There’s no “need” for this crap on a day when we’re to remind ourselves of the freedoms we’ve been allowed thanks to those that gave everything. Let’s leave this paranoid bullshit for the Americans.

Ah, but just imagine the backlash if some idiot decided that this was a good opportunity to launch some sort of attack and we weren’t prepared?
It has happened before.

Did the shooting in parlaiment buildings in Ontario have Bond and Zimmer running scared?
It is sad we have the loonie toons out here but they arrive at the oddest places and the worst times…
Glad today went without incident.

Ram tough, you for real!

Ram tough……Wake the hell up…they are living with
us, and yes it is not pretty, no matter where you are in the world. I feel better knowing I was protected during a civic ceromony. Get your head out of your ass and start learning how the real world works now a days….always have eyes wide open and report everything you see.

Clearly our Prime Minister has now taken our country to the point of paranoia……The Harper Government was very quick to use the word “Terrorist” with respect to the recent tragedies in Ottawa and Montreal but clearly they were a result of mental illness rather than any terror plot….However it makes for good politics when our Prime Minister is hell-bent on transforming Canada…. .Canada pre-Stephen Harper was a country known for its diplomacy and peace keeping who, despite our enemies, had their respect and that of the world… We have watched our Prime Minister run around the world and beat the war drum from Ukraine to Gaza to Iran to Syria to finally finding an enemy in ISIS. With ISIS his threatening rhetoric could finally get backup from our neighbors to the south…..Having a Prime Minister running around the world preaching his version of democratic ideology on other nations, imposing war crime tactics (Israel) on other people, talking tough to Russian President Putin (Ukraine), talking tough on Iran, Libya, Syria, losing our seat on the United Nations Security Council, and saying things like Stephen’s chief spokesman, Jason MacDonald, was against the National Council of Canadian Muslims after MacDonald described the group as having “documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas.” All this leading to building enemies and a loss of worldwide respect…..

I went to the Remembrance Day ceremony today and was shocked to see an RCMP sniper on the roof of our local business’….I was disappointed to see the RCMP wearing regular uniforms and not the traditional ceremonial Red Serge…..Are our Red Serge not Military enough, Stephen?……One promise Stephen Harper made when he took the office of Prime Minister is that Canadians would not recognise Canada when he was done with it…….Can we look forward to seeing our Maple Leaf being burned in the streets of some foreign nation as is a daily occurrence for our neighbors to the south..

Today I had a hard time recognising Canada!

I wanted to make mention of the large contingent of Red Serge RCMP in the Walk to the Cenataph. Their visibility along with all of the others is a comfort to me and I am proud of the extra manpower mixed throughout the ceremony. I am proud of our government, Prime Minister Harper and our RCMP. I thank God every day for the country I was born in, the city I was raised in and the province I call my home. I am blessed. And I appreciate everyone who has been responsible for the quality of life I enjoy.

The beefed up security and the heavy equipment was put in place in Prince George long before there were any so called terrorist shootings, or killings.

You might want to ponder on the need for this security. What are they really concerned about?????

Taxes out I don’t even know where to start. Seems you seriously lack in critical thinking.

This is a great country ! We have so much to be thankful for and especially to our Vets and serving members ! Taxed Out is an idiot but should be thankful to the Vets for his ability to speak freely his idiotic views in this great country ! Look in the mirror Taxed Out, mental illness is staring you in the face !

Taxedout, you are the poster child for why I vote Conservative.
