Prince George, B.C.- Police, fire and ambulance are responding to a report of a three vehicle crash in the area of Highway 97 north and Austin Road.
One person has been taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.
RCMP media Liaison Corporal Craig Douglass says the collision occurred around 7:30 this morning, and one vehicle ended up crashing into the office of Porter and McMillan Insurance in the Hart Mall.
Cpl. Douglass says all three vehicles are now in the parking lot of the Hart Mall, and traffic investigators are on scene trying to sort out the details.

It seems to be accepted practice to drive 20-30km over the posted speed limit on the Hart Highway. People will aggressively tailgate slower drivers. Why doesn’t the RCMP do more speed traps and patrols on our roads to try to reduce this style of driving?
Considering that one of the vehicles hit Porter and MacMillan this crash has absolutely nothing to do with speeding on the Hart Highway. That building is at least 120 meters off the highway. Unless someone was doing mach 10 down the Hart?
the RCMP are part of the problem. they also do 10 to 20 over the limit with no lights or sirens.
If the accident is by Porter and MacMillan then the vehicles were probably on Austin, not the highway, unless they went off the highway and careened across an awful lot of parking lot.
Speed on the Hart around there is a problem though. I frequently turn into the part of the mall where the auto parts store and Subway are, which means, if going south, passing Austin and then taking the first right. It’s a pretty sharp turn so you have to slow down for it, but a lot of other drivers don’t seem to pay attention to your turn signal and come up on you fast or tailgate.l
I never suggested speed was the cause of THIS accident. It’s just a comment about driving style. Period.
I ponder all to often why the local RCMP have no interest in traffic duty unless compelled to do so, and I think it boils down to, they think they work for the Federal government. Their paycheque comes from the Federal government, their boss, is an employee of the Federal government, and they are told where to work, by the Federal government. So, in spite of the fact about 90% of their paycheque is paid for by the good people of Prince George, they actually don’t think they work for us. You go to a place like Delta, and the police are way more aggressive on traffic. Recently in Vancouver, I watched motorcycle cops almost in frenzy pulling over errant drivers, then you come to PG, and you get the odd blitz. Most of the time, our patrol cars are parked on 5th/6th avenue. It would be nice if someone could do an investigative story and find out if the appearance is reality. Is our local detachment really disinterested in protecting us, or does it just appear that way. Then again, I’m sure many citizens of Prince George are happy there’s little traffic enforcement – that is, until one of their friends/relatives is hurt and killed, then there can never be enough police presence.
I’d rather see the RCMP out stopping some real crime and let natural selection take care of the people who don’t know how to drive. There are way too many stupid people with driver’s licenses.
axman – the problem with natural selection is the stupid driver kills someone you love in their pursuit of self destruction. So in order to save the innocent, you have to police the stupid.
Case in point, yesterday, lady in pickup comes up behind me at high speed just 100 metres before a curve, goes to pass me, and a logging truck comes around the curve. Fortunately, she just managed to duck back in behind me, had she failed to do so, she would have hit the logging truck, which likely would have hit me, and three families would be affected by one person being taken out by natural selection. And it was such a stupid move, you just know she does stupid moves on a regular basis, and if the RCMP don’t deal with her, she’ll eventually end up as one of these news stories we all comment on, and we can only hope she’s the only victim.
BTW – what is real crime, drugs? More people are killed on the highways on a long weekend than drugs kill in a year.
ski51 – Instead of policing the stupid, we need it make it much more difficult to obtain and to keep a driver’s license. Keep the stupid from getting behind the wheel in the first place.
The sad part about your story is that if she had killed somebody, the chances of her receiving any significant punishment is pretty remote. She’d get a slap on the wrist and maybe a suspension.
Drugs as a crime? Nah, I’d be happy if the cops patrolled people’s neighbourhoods and prevented the occasional break in. I’d like it if everyone felt safe in their own homes.
“the RCMP are part of the problem. they also do 10 to 20 over the limit with no lights or sirens.”
That is very true! The speed limit in town is 50k/h unless posted otherwise! I get passed (driving in the right hand lane) by police vehicles all the time, on 5th, 10th, 15th – anywhere there is a four lane! They do not usually use the right hand lane, but instead approach from behind in the left lane and pass going over sway over the speed limit, no lights and no siren!
A very poor example, to put it mildly! Why obey speed limits if those supposed to enforce them more often than not ignore them?
I agree axman, but almost anyone can behave for a 30 minute driving test. It’s how they drive afterward that tells us what they know, and without police enforcement issuing tickets, we can’t tell the good from the bad, until there’s an accident. But you’re quite correct, even when the profoundly stupid driver does kill someone, all to often mitigating circumstances, blah blah blah, and a driving ban. Some F.N. guy pulls a knife in the corner store, hurts no one, runs off with cigarettes, get’s 5 years.
Just obey all the Rules and Laws of the Road and you will be fine and watch out for Idiots around you to make it home.
Unbelievable, hardly any tangible comments pertaining to this story or to this serious accident.
Oh My Goodness – this is terrible. Now my insurance broker will find out how difficult it is to deal with insurance companies and ICBC. In all seriousness, I sincerely hope nobody was hurt too badly.
Original collision was at 97 and Austin.
I have been asking for more police presence in this area for years and years due to the terrible drivers in the area and the increased road rage. I have been nearly run over, as a pedestrian, many, many times. Add to this, the numerous logging trucks in the area who prefer to run red lights instead of stopping. Others seem to be in a rush to get to Tim Horton’s as fast as they can, ignoring traffic laws and courtesy to other drivers.
I am amazed that the media, including this site, as well as the police ignore the situation. As I mentioned a few days ago, the situation is nearly as bad when drivers are speeding through the Glenview Elementary School zone, on Dawson Road, day after day. One of these days, one or more people will die and then the police and media will make their statements. Aren’t humans capable of foresight, rather than hindsight after the fact?
Anyone know what happened? I guess that at that hour of the morning the parking lot may have been empty enough so that an out of control vehicle could cross it. Are the other two vehicles vehicles that got hit in the parking lot?

So this truck traveled out of control at a high rate of speed for about 150 meters? I’m not buying it. More likely that something occurred at the intersection of Madill and Austin; about 20 meters away.
There’s a big pool of vehicle juice on the road at hwy 97. I have no idea how he got all the way to the insurance place. Throttle stuck?
I guess we need more driver in the LEFT lane to slow people down
Do they have insurance?
I think its the city that determine policing priorities. So lets get the city to order up more traffic emphasis.
I saw a guy that travelled 200 meters off hwy 16 at a high rate of speed then crashed into a building out in the BCR site. He managed to do it in a straight line. If he would have penetrated the building by another 6 inches he would have been electrocuted. He wouldn’t have known it though, as he was unconscious from the time he left the road until he was revived in the hospital. It’s amazing where you can go when driving a vehicle while unconscious.
Axman, you just don’t seem to get the dynamics of collision.

This guy ending up where he did was not a direct result of the collision. The only way he could get from Austin Road and Hwy 97* to this building would be to have his foot on the accelerator (or something caused the throttle to open). As DM mentions, he could have been unconscious or he could have been so frightened he was unable to react. We don’t know.
Lousy day for all involved is pretty much the only certainty.
*other news source indicate that the crash did indeed occur on the highway and not “in the area”.
I agree with your stupid theory earlier axman. Take stupid out of vehicles, quads, sleds and the world would be a much safer, cheaper place.
