Fluoride, the NO Side
Prince George, B.C.- The “No” side , which urges you to select “No” in the referendum on the continuation of water fluoridation, points to Northern Health stats which have been interpreted by the “NO” side to indicate Northern Health has the worst levels of dental carries ( cavities) among kindergarten students in the province, compared to areas of the province where the water is not fluoridated.
Dave Fuller, who supports the NO side, appeared on the Meisner program this morning on CFISFM .
The referendum which is “non binding” needs 50% plus 1 to pass.
He says he is in it, because there are studies which suggest fluoride can cause some health issues. He asks, “if there is something that could be harming our children, shouldn’t we get rid of it?”
He points to the issue of mass medication, that people don’t have a choice on whether or not to have fluoride in their water. He says “putting fluoride in the water to help your teeth is like drinking sunscreen to prevent a sunburn” that the only way fluoride helps teeth is if it is applied to the teeth.
Fuller says Northern Health is abdicating it’s responsibility, “Northern Health is asking the City to fluoridate the city, it becomes a city issue on taxes, at the same time, Northern Health has a program that offers free fluoride drops to anyone who wants it.”
He says there are also programs that offer dental care at no cost “The programs are there, so it (fluoridation) is a duplication in services.”
He says instead of fluoridation, “We should be teaching people how to do a better job (of oral hygiene).”
Regardless of the final vote, Fuller says, ” I’m walking away from this after this weekend, I’m just as sick of this as everyone else in the community.”

Really? Without slagging anyone or otherwise infringing on the site rules, my comment was removed. Why is that?
Ben summed it up nicely at the beginning of this interview.
You have the Canadian Medical and Dental Associations, Northern Health, the Canadian Cancer Society, The BC Medical Association, and not mentioned, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The World Health Organization, and the American Medical Association, etc. etc., and then you have Dave Fuller of Ave Maria.
‘Nuff said.
Humm… Seems to me we had the same issue with cigarettes. This is a chronic issue not acute, so the real effects will likely not be know for years. Personally, I do a lot of sports. Drinking lots of Fluoride is not a good idea, so to avoid it. To do this, I spend over $100 a year. That’s seems a bit nuts to me, fluoride can be provide other ways at no risk to the general populace, but for those who don’t care, it seems free and they tell me I have choice. Really. We have great water, some of the best in the world, too bad we add crap to it.
I have to agree with PGGUYY on this one, stop adding chemicals to our water, health benefits or not, food grade or not.
Take the money that is spent on fluoridation each year and spend it on proper training in the schools how to properly take care of your teeth and what not to eat. Supply the population with dental floss and a tooth brush that do not have the funds to purchase these items. Fluoride is not the fix all for healthy teeth.
Mr. Fuller said that he has spoken to local doctors and dentists who are against the practice, but stopped short of naming them. Hmmm…
Life is about choices. If doctors and dentist choose to drink fluoridated water knock yourselves out. I personally would like the option of taking the risk “OH NATURAL WAY” as my fore fathers have done for thousands of years.
Sooner not have my children used as lab rats for statistics 100 years from now
Sorry to inform you, Mav, but fluoride occurs naturally in water. That’s how they discovered that it works.

Thanks for your attempt to educate me on something I already knew J.B. I guess I should have chose “CHEMICALLY ENHANCED” does that wok for you!
The stuff that is being injected into our tap water is a toxic effluent from the aluminum and fertilizer industry! Mankind built those scrubbers, Mother Nature had nothing to do with it!
Many Prince George residents paying for and drinking reverse osmosis water purchased in 23 Litre containers when Prince George tap water is the finest and safest in the world, which of course it was BEFORE being chemically altered.
Doctors and dentists may express an opinion to someone who they asked not to divulge their names. Happens all the time. Question: What are you insinuating….
Why are places like Mackenzie doing so well without it?
Be glad to see it gone.
Cant wait for Sunday AM. Hopefully this issue whether is passes or not disappears. Cant believe the time and effort put into a non issue.
I think I’ll spend the rest of the day smoking, drinking whisky, eating canned goods, and breathing in exhaust fumes from all the traffic. If this doesn’t make me feel better then I will spend a few hours on Pulp Mill Road breathing in the fumes. Should fill up on candy also, so that I can get my fill of sugar, and then top that off with a diet drink.
All in all I should have a good day. Hmmmm. Might even top it off with a glass of tap water.
Go ahead, choose your poisons, make my day! You have a choice and that is what it is all about!
Right Prince George. I suppose you choose to breath the pulp mill/husky oil fumes. Exhaust fumes from gasoline engines, chemicals in canned goods. You might think you can choose, but in fact you cant. There is something bad for you in everything you eat.
What about all the crap they put into turkeys, chickens, cattle, cereals etc;
What about all the chemical fertilizers that eventually gets into the water system, and then goes down your gullet???
Fluoride in water is the least of your worries.
Palopu, we don’t throw in the towel! We deal with one after the other! Lead in paint and gasoline, gone. Asbestos in houses and used as pipe insulation, gone. Create smoke free areas, such as restaurants, done! DDT used as a pesticide, gone. Asbestos in brake linings, gone. A lot has been achieved already and personally I choose, whenever I have a choice! So it is with tap water! Presently I do not have a choice as there is only one fluoridated tap water available! That needs to be changed by simply turning off the injection pumps! 60 years ago it might have been a good idea, but now fluoride is available in tooth paste, pills and when in the dentist chair under professional supervision!
Let’s just join the 21st century and stop adding an unnecessary industrial chemical to the tap water!
It is a very reasonable request as 97 % of B.C. already free from it!
Prince George. I think that all the things you listed were supported by the various branches of our health services.
I doubt very much that Northern Health, WHO, and all the others supported having lead in paint, asbestos in houses, ddt as a pesticide, etc; etc; so in fact they were the ones that were mostly responsible for getting rid of these things.
Problem is they don’t support you on this issue, in fact they disagree with you. Hmmmmmm.
Good on your teeth topically period! WHO and CDC agrees that injesting it has little or no effect at all. I would be willing to bet every Naturopath in town is on the NO side. Remember NH doesn’t have a problem with nurses that are HIV positive giving injections to people. Don’t they have bottled water at NH! Hmmmmm.
I just don’t understand why anyone would want to drink water with chemicals int!Ifsomeone wants fluoride on their teeth they should rinse their mouths with it.
You all know that most of the food you eat is fortified with vitamins and minerals too, right?
Fact is, if you’re trying to live a chemical free lifestyle, fluoride should be amongst the least of your worries.
how much radon gas in our water
JB:”Fact is, if you’re trying to live a chemical free lifestyle, fluoride should be amongst the least of your worries.”
It is up to me in which order I place my efforts to attain a lifestyle that is as free of needless and dangerous chemicals as possible! At this point in time (B.C. is already 97% fluoridation free) I choose (!!!) to make this potentially harmful fluoridation matter my top issue!
Palopu, NH does not agree with those who want clean un-medicated tap water.
Pity!
@PG: Once again, there are no credible scientific studies which show harm at approved levels. If there were, the practice would be stopped worldwide immediately.
It is also proven JB that topically is best. How many of the yes people will line up for free drops from NH if the process is stopped? Will NH make those drops themselves with the same waste the city is putting in the water now? Would you take those drops?
We get enough fluoride now at the dentist and in our toothpaste. If you want more go get the free drops and let the rest of us drink cleaner water.
JB, data collected by the World Health Organization shows that the dental health of people worldwide has improved (due to reasons well known) equally in countries which still fluoridate and those who do not!
Can’t say that I enjoyed commenting to your comments as they were far too dismissive and often designed be direct personal attacks!
Still, thank you for giving me a really wonderful incentive to reply to them! This forum is read by many people, so hopefully my comments have made an impact! You, more than me, kept the comments and counter comments going!
Have a great weekend!
