Prince George, B.C. – A pair of World War II veterans from Prince George were honoured during a special ceremony at the Royal Canadian Legion this afternoon.

Armand Denicola and John Kuharchuk were given the National Order of the Legion of Honour by the French government – the highest honour given in their country.

The award coincides with the 70 year anniversary of D-Day as both men were two of 14,000 Canadians to storm Juno Beach.

Liberal MLA Shirley Bond presented the awards and noted France underwent an extensive search to find the men as the honour is not bestowed posthumously.

“We could not be more proud that two of the recipients live in Prince George and are members of this legion.”

Both men gave brief speeches. Denicola noting “when I die I’ll never go to hell. I’ve been there.”

After the ceremony his grandson Simon Quarenghi said he was “beyond words and pretty overwhelmed. I can’t imagine how he feels.”

“when I die I’ll never go to hell. I’ve been there.”
So few of us have seen anything like the hell these vets have been through,
the liberal minded folks among us want to ignore it.
They fought for our freedom, I thank them for their sacrifice, and saddened that so many had to die for it. I have no doubt these fellows probably still have nightmares of those days.
I wish them well.

Yes indeed, well said Griz.
Thank you gentlemen and all of your compatriots who couldn’t be here too.

Thousands of words have been written and films have recorded the events.
So get off your ass and check them out instead of a song and dance explanation,
Cheers
