Volunteers Needed to Rescue Christmas Tradition

Saturday, November 29, 2014 @ 4:13 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Okay all you toughies out there, it’s time to bring it on and show what you’ve got.

Yes this story is directed at all of the folks who knock people who complain about the snow, and the cold and the length of northern winters. It’s a story that’s also directed at people who may want to help save a bit of a Christmas tradition.

As 250 News editor Elaine Macdonald wrote at the beginning of the week, after the City cancelled this year’s Northern Lights display atop Connaught Hill due to Canada Winter Games commitments, the Railway and Forestry Museum stepped up to the plate and said “hey, we’ll put it on here.”

So the City has turned the light displays over to the museum for this year, but volunteer help is needed to set it all up, and that is happening today. Now the weather is a little “brisk”, to say the least, but that should be nothing to all of you hearty, winter doesn’t bother me, guys and gals. Right?

Museum Executive Director Ranjit Gill says despite the cold, “we’re definitely going ahead, yes. As you can appreciate, the City crews start putting up the exhibit in October, and we just got it in the last couple of days so we don’t have much time to put it up.” City workers usually put it up on Connaught Hill over a matter of weeks.

Gill says “we’ve had four volunteers here today (Friday) and are hoping to get a number of volunteers on Saturday, and we’ll just see how it goes. You know if we don’t we get all done we’ll make another call for volunteers because I think the weather is supposed to get a bit warmer next week.”

She says “most of the work (today) will be outdoors because we have a book signing as well so we’re hoping to finish our gallery set-up before that starts, and we’ll be outside.” So you should dress accordingly. “That’s right”, says Gill, “and we’ll give them hot chocolate to keep them warm.”

If you can lend a hand or two, you’re asked to show up at the Railway and Forestry Museum at 10 this morning.
