The Prince George Cougars are pleased to announce that forward Jansen Harkins (1997 – North Vancouver, B.C.) will represent the Prince  George Cougars and the WHL in the 2015 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. The game is set for Thursday, January 22nd in St. Catherines, Ont.. The  6’1”, 180 pound centre will suit up for Team Orr at the event.

Originally selected second overall by the Cougars in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Harkins has flourished in Prince George since his arrival. In 34 games this season, Harkins has registered 12 goals and 39 points (a team high) which are both new season highs. In 106 career games, he’s scored 22 goals and added 51 assists for 73 points.

Internationally Harkins has also thrived. Earlier this summer Harkins represented Team Canada at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic/Slovakia where he helped lead Canada to a gold medal. He finished the tournament with two goals and four assists in six games. He also captained Team Pacific to a Silver Medal during the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Sydney, N.S.

He is currently rated as an ‘A’ prospect on NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary List for 2015 draft eligible players and was recently ranked 11th overall on TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button’s monthly list for December.

“We are very proud of Jansen for all of his accomplishments both locally and internationally,” said Prince George Cougars head coach Mark Holick. “He’s a very committed young man whose goal is to play in the National Hockey League and everything he does is geared towards that goal.”

Harkins will be joined in Ontario by 11 other representatives from the WHL including seven that will join him on Team Orr. This marks the second consecutive season that the Cougars will have had a representative at this game as Ty Edmonds suited up for Team Cherry last year in Calgary, AB.

In the past 19 years a total of 265 players from this event have been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.

32 of the CHL’s 60 member clubs will be represented in this game. The 40 CHL players include 15 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, 13 from the Ontario Hockey League, and 12 from the Western Hockey League.

I’m a first year season ticket holder, and he was the first player that I noticed that was playing with heart. Not with holding the great improvement in effort I have seen from the whole team, but Harkins stood out

Go Coug’s go

He never takes a shift off. He played so many minutes last night, I thought he would collapse but he figured in on all 4 cougar goals. Congratulations Jansen, you deserve the recognition!

His stock is really on the rise. I’m sure he will be a first round pick, he’s a great player.
