Drivers Urged to be Cautious With Heavy Snowfall Expected

Prince George, B.C. – A snowfall warning has prompted police to urge motorists to be cautious when driving on area roads and highways.

Environment Canada is predicting 10 to 15 cms of the white stuff by tomorrow morning and Staff Sergeant Pat McTiernan with North District Traffic Services says drivers need to be prepared – especially if headed out on a long trek.

“Make sure you have water, you have something to eat and you’ve got blankets in your car. In the event you get stopped or something happens and you have to wait for emergency services to come to you.”

And just as critically he urges motorists to drive to the road and winter conditions.

“We’re still seeing people who are traveling in excess of the posted speed limits. That’s totally unacceptable.”

McTiernan says drivers need to slow down and be able to react to the unexpected whether it be wildlife stepping out onto the road or other drivers swerving out of control.

He also reminds drivers of the basics such as clearing windshields and head and tail lights of snow and other debris to ensure “other motorists can see what you’re doing.”

The wintry weather conditions isn’t just posing challenges in the north, but across the province.

DriveBC has issued travel advisories for Highway 5 between Hope and Kamloops and for Highway 97C between Merritt and West Kelowna.

In addition an avalanche has closed Highway 31 north of Trout Lake and south of Meadow Creek.
