Cougars, Kings Swap Forwards
Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Cougars have acquired local forward Brogan O’Brien from the Prince George Spruce Kings for forward Chance Braid.
Selected by the Kelowna Rockets in the 10th round of the 1010 WHL Bantam Draft, O’Brien checks in at 6’2”, and 195 pounds. In 35 games with the Spruce Kings this season the power forward has scored six goals, nine assists and 22 penalty minutes. Last season as a 16-year-old, O’Brien scored nine goals and nine assists in 48 games. Earlier this week he was invited to participate in the CJHL Top Prospects Game which will take place in Oakville, ON on January 20th.
“We are very happy to add a player with O’Brien’s skill-set to our organization,” said Prince George Cougars General Manager, Todd Harkins. “He’s a big and rugged forward with loads of upside, and we are going to do everything we can to try and get him signed.”
Braid was acquired by the Cougars last summer in a trade with the Prince Albert Raiders. In 35 games with the Cougars this season, Braid scored eight goals, five assists and 42 penalty minutes.

I like the trade as it opens a 20 year old spot up,if they can pull off a late trade. I hope this new goalie works out as well,as having both goalies out of the top 20 in a 18 team league is not good. You can blame penalties and poor defence for some of the goals, but we have given many games away on soft goals as well!
This can’t be an official trade since both teams are in different leagues. Can teams on multiple leagues hold the rights to a player similar to an NHL team holding the rights to a drafted CHL player.
Can someone explain better how this works? I don’t understand exactly how this works for this level of hockey.
Thanks
It is not a trade at all. As the story states the Cougars are going to try and sign the kid. The cats are more likely clearing out braid as he is 20 and holds one of the three spots for 20 year olds. The o’brien kid must have something going for him besides his numbers. His stats are not overly impressive. Will braid want to play for the Kings? Will o’brien want to play for the cats? Who knows. But there is more to the story.
Well I like to dream….maybe Bourke is coming back to fill the 20 year old spot?!
Braid will be playing for Kelowna,! They traded the the rights to O’brien for Braid! It’s that simple
