North District RCMP Gears up for Distracted Driving Campaign
Prince George, B.C. – The North District RCMP is gearing up for another distracted driving campaign in February.
And Staff Sergeant of Traffic Services Pat McTiernan says they may have a few more tricks up their sleeves this time around.
“We’ve put it out to our supervisors to come up with some new ideas because the status quo is just them watching and when they see somebody on their cell phone they react to it.”
He says some different ideas include the use of spotting scopes and enforcement in construction zones (the scope allows police to clearly see what drivers are doing two or three blocks up the road).
McTiernan says construction areas are commonly trouble spots, “Those areas where motorists can come in and grab their phones because they’re slowing down and start making calls.”
Statistics show drivers still aren’t getting the message when it comes to the dangers associated with distracted driving.
According to ICBC it was the second-leading cause of motor fatalities in B.C. from 2009 to 2013 (88 per year) just behind speeding (105 per year).

Start taking their little toys away!
Another place to look is Timmies lineups.
Timmies lineups are private property; you can use your phone there. Not the smartest move but this is PG.
I agree though, impound the damn phones!
It’s a good idea. But if they impounded the phones, I could just imagine how much more clogged the court system would be with people challenging what the officer saw. You’d need some sort of indisputable photographic evidence.
I would have to challenge you on that one Axman. I think the law stipulate that you can use a hand held device while operating a vehicle. I seriously doubt there is a line that says unless you are operating a vehicle on private property.
…of course i meant to say that you CAN NOT use a hand held device….
The RCMP should have plain closed officers searching the traffic for abusers, I can even count on two hands the number of times I see people on their phones, and that is in just one day to and from town.
Evidence of the use of phone during driving is quite easy. All the police officer has to do is record exact time. The rest will be done thru the cell service provider.
Good point, HeSpoke.
So if you put it on speaker phone, and your not holding it, will it be considered a handheld device?
So the new campaign begs the question…
How many of the ticketed people will bitch, moan and wine about the police ticketing them instead of going after real criminals?
if the rcmp enforced the laws of the road on a regular basis people would not drive like such idiots! Just saying they set the stage, the simple fact that police are present reduces crime and increases likelihood of people following the rules. This campaign thing is a cop out!

And you’d be partially correct; I just looked it up and part of the definition of a highway is:
“(c) every private place or passageway to which the public, for the purpose of the parking or servicing of vehicles, has access or is invited,”
so the Tim Horton’s drive through would indeed qualify.
I say “partially” correct because it would not apply to your driveway or a parking lot that was not open to the public.

So a logging truck driver calling out his miles on a CB is in violation of the law?

No. There are stipulations in the Act to permit that.
Put plain clothes police at busy intersections and they can also help to keep the pedestrians safe in the crosswalks while the poor drivers, playing with their toys, try to run over them. Austin Road and Highway 97, as I reported repeatedly, is a very risky place for a pedestrian. Traffic law enforcement should be an every day assignment for police members.
You know Honestjoe, the other day I had to buy a new set of ski poles, and as I walked back to my office from the store, carrying my new long, sharp, ski poles, I almost felt like cars gave me a bit more room on the cross walk – almost like they were afraid – I don’t know, afraid that if they got too close, they might get scraped. I’m certainly not advocating intentionally hurting a car, but I suspect if they see you’ve got a way of hurting them back, they pay more attention – also handy for those dogs that owners claim never bite, but still like to jump up on you, like everyone wants wet dog paw on their clothes.
WHAT about city bus drivers calling all stops?
WELL LETS approach the new mayor with this brilliant brainstorm. start leaving a set of ski poles both sides of a crosswalk?
“WELL LETS approach the new mayor with this brilliant brainstorm. start leaving a set of ski poles both sides of a crosswalk?”
Lol…they’d be pawned in no time.
Iits easy, there are cell phone blockers available for the inside of vehicles. If the ignition is turned on the cell phone will not work. If the y want the problem solved, make it law that every vehicle have one installed. Problem solved.
Taxi
Ironically cell phone blocking is illegal as a school teacher on the island found out.
The cell phone makers could disable the device after X kM/hr but would they ever do it! Even though hands free is not against the law it has been proven that the same blindness phenomena happens when you talk on the phone period. Ban hands free too!
If you idiots can’t talk on your cell phone and drive, than stay the hell of the road. What a bunch of losers.
navigator11, unfortunately not all drivers have your super human multitasking abilities. Take comfort in knowing I will be there to pump life into the chest of yet another victim of the un-gifted, hopefully not someone you love!
Sarcasm Off.
Maybe you need therapy for your little toy addiction Navigator?
Distracted driving caused deaths has surpassed drunk driving deaths. So no, you can’t drive and talk on the phone at the same time and the ones that do are the losers Navigator.
Cell phone blockers, uh wouldn’t that block passengers?
navigator11,Lol, you should change your handle to statistic. Me!, Me!, Me! your hit single?
