Prince George, B.C. – No further news from Prince George City Council following Monday’s special closed meeting in council chambers.

According to the City web page the closed meeting was called for Council to consider subject matter relating to labour relations or other employee relations, and to receive advice that is subject to solicitor-client privilege, including communications necessary for that purpose.

“No comment other than what we sent out in Saturday’s press release,” said Mayor Lyn Hall at YXS Monday night.

That includes no comment on whether or not the City’s communications manager Todd Corrigall is still employed with the city or the details regarding departing city manager Beth James severance package.

As 250News reporter Don Hawkins reported Saturday, James is entitled to receive severance of six month’s salary along with one month per year of service to a maximum 18 months.

The contract also contained an annual salary of $212,000, a vehicle allowance of $6,000 per year, 30 vacation days and the basic benefits given all city exempt staff. For her move to Prince George from Vancouver she was given $25,000 for relocation expenses.

The Mayor needs to talk to his handlers before he’s allowed to speak.

Gotta see how cupe wants to handle things.

or our Mayor is being respectful and responsible concerning an HR matter…

YXS, where was Lyn going, CUPE headquarters for his Kudo’s. Just like CUPE, so far this has only cost the poor old worker/taxpayer nothing but money. Let’s see a business decision soon hey.

agreed @Veritas much more respectful to give those who are losing their jobs time to prepare for a news release

There is always a cost involved when you want someone out. No different when your employer wants you to leave. If your full time, the employer still need to give a severance package. Union or no union.

For six months wages plus 7 weeks, it will like cost the city 125k. It will be $2.00 for every household.

Was she really that bad, for what she did for the city. Sounds like she was a bit of a control freak. Wanted everyone to communicate thru her. Wanted to run on finance based decisions…. not all bad.

Would she be in, if Don had won the mayor race.

Maybe Lyn and Beth had a long quiet discussion in a closed office. Where they both shared their objectives for the next three years, and they mutually decided to part company. I would assume Lyn, is a bit left of center, while Beth would be right of center. Thus they probably were going to clash down the road anyway, thus the decision probably saved us a few dollars, making this decision 2 years down the road.

hopefully the hiring committee for the next city manager position does not pick a “yes person”. Hopefully, someone that can keep the staff in line, and be able to stand up to the mayor and council when required too.

I wonder when the search will begin for a new city manager. I can think of some great candidates that I would nominate.

Someone thats been a well respected and liked regional administrator in the north for some 30-years with a dozen or so years experience in the private sector as a general manager dealing with infrastructure build out, road construction, and road maintenance would be a good choice. Ideally someone that is not trying to build a career with the position, but maybe serving for a single term with an eye for getting value for the public and can be open and honest if retirement is the end game. Someone that can get a proper deal on pavement costs, and knows how to run a civic government with experience, but also knows how to ensure costs controls on infrastructure issues that the city will be facing in the coming term. If this person was available to start right away coming out of early retirement it would give the city 3-4 years to find a long term candidate that could step into a functioning city hall more able to handle the cities coming infrastructure deficit.

It will be interesting to see the direction taken on hiring the new city manager and the qualities that the new mayor and council will be looking for. Will it be a partisan appointment or the best person for the job?

This appears to have similarities of what has happened in Quesnel in the past & what is currently happening in Saanich now. They players are different, positions, situations etc. but the lack of attention to the jobs given the various managers involved, egos first attitude, lack of respect to their employer, The City, Mayor, Counsel, staff, employees etc. leads me to believe the tax payers are in for a real @#* kicking here. The Lawyers on all sides must be licking their lips in anticipation …
If ANY impropriety is involved here by the players why should the tax payers have to pay a cent? Wouldn’t contracts signed have clauses that would void payouts if any of those involved did things wrong to cause this entire situation? Have the Tax Payers been set up?

YXS, where was Lyn going,

———-

I’m pretty sure he was there for the inaugural Victoria to PG flight.

One consideration here may be legal fees. Suppose you’ve got an employee you want to terminate. If she has done something that is well documented and clearly wrong, you’re in good shape, especially if it was a crime, since in that case much of the work will be done by the RCMP and the criminal courts. If the impropriety is less clear or less well documented and the employee fights back, you could easily run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. In a case like that, it may make economic sense to pay severance rather than treat the matter as a dismissal for cause.

Are we ever getting a lot of mileage on this one and all the expert opinions that go with-it.
Cheers

I find it funny that no matter what story is posted, the same people are always negative. The new mayor hasn’t even had time to breathe and he’s already doomed.

Eagleone posted: “I wonder when the search will begin for a new city manager. I can think of some great candidates that I would nominate.”

How many on your list have ties to CUPE? I would bet that the new position will be awarded to a “brother”

“…shared their objectives for the next three years,…”

Make that four years, the new length of the term.

interceptor… yes because all managers are cupe members..lol

hear, hear!
I often question why I bother to read the comments :)

Not necessarily a member pval, but will have ties. Just watch.

LIKE JB so humbly puts it…………THE ELECTION HAS BEEN RUN…. YOU LOST, MOVE ON

Nowadays it seems that the only winners are those who got elected and the friends who got them there. No matter who’s in power one thing is always constant; the tax payer loses.

Who’s negative? It depends on ones perspective.

Well all have ties with a union member Interceptor. It would be nice to get someone who can do,the job competently. Isn’t scared to do what needs to be done. Let’s hope for,the best and see what happens.

I would hope that they can find someone who has done the job before at perhaps a smaller city, or who has been deputy to a city manager in a larger one.
Someone who can demonstrate through previous employment that they have the necessary skills and acumen to manage the city effectively. I would like to see someone that won’t be beholden to unions or business groups. One last requirement, whoever they hire has to understand that they serve at the will of council, and not the other way around. They have to understand that ultimately council is the boss. If they could find another George Paul out there somewhere we would have our city manager for at least the next 10 years

I don’t Pval – I had a couple of family members once but I’ve disowned them :P
J/k of course but I do agree in hoping that whoever it is is good for the city
