Prince George, B.C. – In what can only be described as a big relief, the Prince George Public Library finally unveiled its brand new washroom facilities this morning at their Bob Harkins branch.
The new facilities are fully accessible, automated and also include a separate gender-neutral/family room.
“We’re very excited about our new washrooms,” said chief librarian Janet Marren.”They’ve been long identified by our users as needing improvement.”
She was also proud to note they are also scooter accessible.
“Yes, the mobility devices are getting larger and larger. We actually had a situation where somebody was stuck. It was very evident we needed to improve.”
Also installed at the library are two water bottle filling stations/drinking fountains donated by the 2015 Canada Winter Games and REAPS Direct Access Gaming Grant.
Mayor Lyn Hall also acknowledged this morning that city staff are still preparing a report on the viability of upgrades to the library’s front entrance,
“The entrance is still on the books as far as administration doing a business case for it. That was turned back to administration about four months ago so we’ll have to get some information to talk about what that entire project looks like – specifically cost. Right now we’re looking at anywhere from $5 million to $6 million. So that’s going to be a big discussion point for council when we get that report back.”
According to the City the washroom upgrades cost $273,700 before taxes.

And seriously, was a ribbon cutting necessary? You know you live in a small town when…
I was hoping for the last line of the story to be, “…and immediately after the ceremony, Mayor Hall christened the new faciltiies.”
Nice to see the new Councilors out and about.
Not so crazy about spending $5 Million on a new entrance to the Library. With the present steps, and elevators, one would think that was sufficient.
Lets keep in mind that we praised the Architect over the years for the present design, and now we are saying that it is no good. Hmmmmm. Were we right then and wrong now, or wrong then and right now.?????
it is so nice that this was leaked outhis was leaked out….
sorry the letters are not showing up when I am typing
Where is Shirley?
Now let’s see if they can get a public bathroom in the Service BC building.
Only in Prince George!!!!
This is huge news for all the peeople who use mobilty devices ot get around our city. Way to go, library for giving everyone the chance to do something most of us take for granted..use a bathroom safely.
legit observation there sarahsmith … sometimes we forget and take the little things in life for granted until they are taken away.
