Pomeroy Hotel Project One Step Closer

Prince George, B.C. – City Council has granted third reading to an application to rezone a piece of Prince George Golf and Curling Club lands to allow for the construction of a Pomeroy Hotel .
Pomeroy Group plans to build two four storey hotel buildings that would be joined by a pool and fitness facility. This complex would provide 243 rooms.
Councillor Brian Skakun had questions about access to the site, and the City is working with Pine Centre Mall to have Rec Place continue on through to the Mall, to allow for better traffic flow. “I think this is an exciting development” says Councillor Brian Skakun “I just wish it was happening downtown.”
Council unanimously approved third reading.

I wonder if they’ll get this constructed before the downtown stalled Delta project?
I hope they do. This will be a great addition to that location.
Dear Skakun, enough of your downtown dreams, stop pushing the agenda at every turn.
Would be nice if the city would start incorporating user friendly pedestrian and cycling routes throughout the entire city of P.G.
“I wonder if they’ll get this constructed before the downtown stalled Delta project?”
Too bad it wasn’t closer to the river. We could refer to it as the “staled delta project”. Hopefully P.G. tax payers wouldn’t be stuck cleaning up that mess.
It’s too bad they can’t just take over the Delta project.
Mr. Skakun, Pine Centre has been the NEW downtown for years, don’t yuh know?
I would say if they went the middle third of each building 6-stories and made of wood, then they’d have a deal with the city of PG. Have sight lines lining up with the casino 6-story building and the rest of the surroundings including Pine Center, Highway 16 and the downtown in the far background.
If they are going to go this big might as well do it right from the get go.
On the cities part, this is a huge opportunity to really add to the quality of life in PG with the Rec Road extension to Pine Center. As part of this and the windfall the PG Golf and Curling Club gets in any land sale, there should be pay back to recreational equal opportunity in the form of a perimeter walking path (ie Rec Road, Ferry Ave, Westwood, Pine Center) that is separated from the road side by a small buffer zone.
Having a quality walking trail encompassing this area around the golf and Curling club lands would make for a high quality, well lit, safe, and useful improvement to the city. The real question is why not?
On Pomeroy’s part, I think it would be wise to insist on something like a perimeter walking path linking the areas around the PG Golf Club. It would be very attractive to their guests and help sell the area around their hotel.
Hahahaha downtown. I wish the older generation would get over the idea of revamping a downtown core with new businesses like large hotels and big box stores. It won’t happen. People want it all confined to new, easy access areas and business folk want to make it even easier for their customers to come visit them. Highway 16 project is a damn good idea and it will liven up that area from the ugly, poorly designed crap it is now. Maybe the city can scrap that yield/merge exit to Hwy 97 from Pine Centre once this gwts built. Not to mention it’ll probably be cheaper not to build downtown. Delta should have known that…
“People want it all confined to new, easy access areas and business folk want to make it even easier for their customers to come visit them” .. and those of the younger generation don’t even realize the above statement is the definition of what a downtown core is supposed to be. Easy access to multiple businesses and shops in a central area. I think you just contradicted yourself. I don’t know how building a shopping and business corridor from Pine Center to Walmart is exactly keeping it confined.
The downtown is dead. Past Mayors and councils saw to that a long time ago.
The currently unknown state, and future, of the Delta Hotel project makes me ask a question: What assurances does the city put in place to ensure that if a project stalls partway through that the tax payers aren’t left with an eyesore or a huge tax burden when it comes to remediation?
That being said, the buildings look great, and they should be a nice addition to the city, and hopefully it all goes off without a hitch.
Ok ok so confined was a bad word choice I admit that. If you take a good hard look at what is going on along Highway 16 you may get a better understanding of why downtown is out…Downtown is too small and is filled. Leave it alone. It’s time to fill in the gaps in other prime locations and keep downtown a business district of office towers, banks and the small local businesses. It’s nice to see the smaller gaps downtown being filled with local stuff not big box corporate stores.
Any other option rather than Signature Sandman will be great.
“Downtown is too small and is filled”
================
Unfortunately, it’s filled with stuff that doesn’t really make for a great downtown. It needs to be re-developed in a cohesive way in order for it to flourish. I don’t think it’s too small, in fact, in many ways I think it is too big. I also don’t think there is a great opportunity to do it unless the population of PG grows a great deal. The city had been developed in such a patchwork manner, that any of the developments that could have helped, are already completed. Not sure there is enough to work with unless the city moves into another phase of growth.
What assurances does the city put in place to ensure that if a project stalls partway through that the tax payers aren’t left with an eyesore or a huge tax burden when it comes to remediation?
Good question. Why don’t you get off the internet and ask?

Any other option rather than Signature Sandman will be great. Speaking of the Sandman when is the siding going on the building?
Stayed in the one in Chetwynd, had the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in
