Friday Free for All – Feb. 20th
Thursday, February 19, 2015 @ 11:59 PM
The first week of the Canada Winter Games has ended, as has the first week of Spring Break.
So, with another group of visitors and athletes set to arrive, we say goodbye to those who were here for the opening ceremonies.
Today though is your day to speak up on the issues that matter to you.
It is time for the Friday Free for All. You pick the topic, but as always, please, obey the three simple rules:
Keep it clean
Keep it legal
No Bullying.

Glad to see that the Canada Winter Games has been going well so far. ALL of you volunteers are doing a great job! Even though the weather has not co-operated with the Games, there are so many dedicated people out there leaving a good impression on the many visitors/competitors who have come to town.
Enjoy the weekend, take in some of the events/free concerts/fireworks
One year on Harper sure has a lot to be proud of in his support for the Ukraine coup. The Ukraine army had a quarter of their army, and all their top units, completely annihilated in Debaltseve this last week.
Out of 8000 men in Debaltseve, the Ukraine army lost 3500 in ten days, over 2000 unaccounted for (POW’s), and barely 2500 able to escape with their lives. The writing was on the wall, everyone knew this was coming.
Chancellor Merkel wanting to avoid the Ukraine losing its army… as it was surrounded, demoralized, and slowly disintegrating… was able to negotiate with Putin a way out to save the Ukraine Army. This is what a true friend of Ukraine would and should have done.
Harper had other plans. He wanted them to fight on and the day of the peace guidelines agreed to by Poroshenko and Putin… we had Jason Kenney our new Defense Minister telling reporters Canada looks forward to assisting in the fight with deadly force weapons exports… when asked by the reporter what Canada could supply, Kenney said while we don’t have lots of stockpiles of our own and don’t produce a lot of the weapons needed, but that Canada could ‘procure’ the needed weapons for Ukraine and then supply them to the Ukraine Army as foreign aid.
So with European leaders trying to deescalate the situation and negotiate a way to save the Ukraine Army… Harper is pouring fuel on the fire offering to use Canadian tax payers to fund a Ukraine war as a weapons trader financier, and with troops for ‘training’ on the front lines. Encouraging the Ukraine government to refuse the offer of safe surrender, and in the process sacrificing the heart of their fighting force.
Kenney’s export of western arms to Ukraine is wrong on so many levels. Primarily being this is a war that can not be won when fought against Russia, so only more misery will result. But as import is the factor that these weapons will then fall into Russian hands and the theater of war will be a perfect testing ground for the Russians against western weaponry.
Harper and Kenney have zero strategic sense. Their allies are from the loony bin refusing to even accept the reports from their own front lines of their demise (ultimately the troops themselves taking Putins last offer of clemency to save their lives against orders to stay from Kiev). The Kiev coup politicians are living in complete denial operating as if from a fantasy world.
On the one hand Poroshenko signs an agreement to save his military, agreeing to the concept of a federal nation and negotiated with the rebels towards a constitution, and on the other hand Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk is talking martial law for anyone that supports the Russian population including pro Russian MP’s in the legislature who will be ‘relocated’ to the Russian side of a proposed Russian boarder wall. In one breath they say they are for peace, and in the other they are for ethnically cleansing anyone that speaks Russian or supports pro Russian politicians….
So in my opinion Canada has no place in the Ukraine war, a self inflicted war, and Harper has no place using Canadian tax dollars to finance the weapons used in this war. The Ukraine will have nothing left to build a country on if they continue to follow the policies pushed by the likes of Harper. The disrespect shown for civil rights of civilians (much less a sacrificial army) in the East of the Ukraine shows the true colors of the Harper regime.
If Harper wanted to be useful he would instruct the Kiev government on the need to respect human rights, the merits of multicultural rights, and the merits of a federalist system rather than a unitary top down centralized state that Kiev is pushing for. Harper should be telling Kiev that racism in all forms will not be tolerated by Canada, and that the use of mercenary forces in domestic collective punishment operations has to stop. If one takes away the violence against the Russian speaking citizens from the state then that is the first thing that can be done to stop the civil war, and blunt Russian involvement in Ukraine.
Declaring war on Russia should not be Canadian policy, nor should the idea that we are tied to the crimes of fascist mercenaries with no room for Canadian values to be spoken of.
IMHO
Hey! People with dogs on Rochester cres. in College Heights….don’t put them outside just so they can sit there and bark. It’s especially annoying when it’s nine thirty at night and all you can hear when you’re trying to get to sleep is someone’s dog barking up a storm.
The next step will be to get bylaw enforcement involved. So you’ve been warned.
Loving the speed skating, exciting to watch. The only thing that would be nice is if the announcing was English first. I am guessing about %75 of the announcing is French. By the time the announcer speaks English the race is almost over.
Was especially nice to see the garbage containers over flowing with garbage on Victoria St for the first 3 days of the winter games. I would think we would have employee’s emptying them or do we wait until it is green garbage day?
Wondering what our snow removal crew hava been up to this past while?
Wow, two week off at Christmas and 2 weeks off for spring break, thought out teachers would be making up for loss time?
Pval I do agree with you I haven’t been able to attend any venues and have been watching online the short track speed skating and while I enjoyed the races I think the French announcer should of done it in both languages as he understood what was going on and was Comfortable announcing while his English counterpart stumbled on the announcing a lot while I understand she was a volenteer it was still painful to listen to
Happy Friday everyone.
All you Winter Game volunteers that are doing us proud: While your our there this weekend volunteering, especially those helping with the move out / move in of competitors, look at the ‘volunteers’ around you and ask yourself ‘Do these people work for the city?’, because if they do there is a very good chance that the city is paying them double time to ‘volunteer’.
Went down to the village (civic plaza) for the first time yesterday….the sidewalks were swepted off NO fracture down…looks great. Thanks night shift city crews.
Wow!!! Gaal retires….no lose on that retirement.
Potholes erupt all over, crews out filling them every night and day. Give it sometime people for summer to get hear so they can be repaired properly with the right asphalt. We all know that the stuff they use in the winter does not hold the same product as what they use in the summer. Thumbs up city crews.
It’s Friday….payday for some….let the games continue…..enjoy your weekend everyone. Cheers.
Old soon smart late
“I think (maverick 1965) has gone to far”.
I have? Whatever do you mean?
Gaals retired. Does this mean we can review the snow removal budget for errors?
BEEF OF THE DAY
Those BRIGHT large signs by McDonalds on 20th and Victoria and the other one by Fortune palace.. Isn’t it TOO bright and too large??? Quite a distraction for drivers.. QUITE annoying
The potholes???/ Haven’t seen any one around working on them… Maybe all out watching the games??
Games seem to be going good, and quite a bit of activity around the athletes village, other than that the town is dead, and retailers and some restaurants/motels are taking a beating.
I don’t think they are going to get the revenue they hoped for, from ticket sales, and visitors.
Maverick
verb (used with object), beat, beaten or beat, beating.
to strike violently or forcefully and repeatedly.
The way I understood your post
Palopu I have to agree with you (yikes :). I have attended a few events so far and the attendance is mediocre at best. The one sport that draws a big crowd is the speed skating, stands aren’t jam packed but close. Hockey has a sparse audience and curling is just okay.. Haven’t been to any outside sports but the people I have talked to say they attendance is okay, nothing great. Have been out to eat at a few places and they all have seen a noticeable increase in patrons so far.. I don’t go dowtown so no clue about those places.
New2pg, maybe they are just volunteers.. Some businesses have let employess volunteer and are paying their wage to go.. Have you stepped up to volunteer? Or just complaining? Btw. Most volunteers don’t care about if the other person is getting paid to be there, they are just happy volunteering..that’s kind of how it works with volunteers.
Well time to get ready for more speed skating, last day for it.. Should be excellent as usual :)
the venues seem half full. I don’t think these games are going to impact our community like they thought it would. hotels are empty. restaurants are asking there regulars to come in.
Stillsmokin they were filling water filled pot holes on 15th the other day..come the first good freeze they will be popping out… a real waste of time and resources.
maverick…maybe just a little over the top??? you want gratuitous violence go to a hockey game. It appears as if it is legal on the. ice but not on the road.
as for garbage .. I think you will find that is city responsibility to empty…
Mercenary, I hear you on the dog issue… I have two right outside the window and the owner adamantly claims they don’t bark and bylaws seems to think so to as they never respond.. heaven forbid that we take them out of the lunch room.
Ask any dispatcher of trucks in this town about driving complaints…
In the summer the complaints are … they’re blocking traffic, going to slow …. in the winter it’s …. they’re driving to fast. As for mercenary ‘ dog complaint put on your big boy pants and go talk to them rather then making statements on a site they probably won’t see.
Hey, is diazamo short for dragonmaster?
From what I heard and observed, including Global and CTV Prince George did a bang up job of hosting these games. Congratulations All.
I have a concern with our provincial and national media. We have all been privy to the rail car tanker spill and fire in the US this week, but I was not aware of Canada (CN) having their own similar spill and fire in NW Not this week. Why do are we exposed to so much news, and mostly bad I might ad from other countries and we don’t get exposed to enough of the problems in pour own back yard (good or bad)? See below article—-
GOGAMA, Ont. — The fire at the scene of a CN freight train derailment southwest of Timmins continued to burn Tuesday as CN’s environmental response team decided that due to the extreme cold and isolated location, it was okay to let the contained fire eventually burn itself out.
Gogoma is a small community located between Sudbury, Ont., and Timmins.
The derailment occurred late Saturday night when a 100-unit tank car train hauling crude oil from Alberta saw 29 tank cars leave the tracks.
TSB spokesman Rob Johnstone said the investigators found some pieces of rail and part of tanker car that might provide information as the cause of the accident.
“We’ve identified a section of broken rail, a broken rail joint and a broken wheel that are of interest. We are attempting to reconstruct some of that broken rail today on site. All the rail components and the broken wheel will be shipped to our engineering lab in Ottawa for further analysis,” said Johnstone.
Johnstone added that the amount of crude oil released from the broken tank cars is not fully known. Nor could he comment on whether the extreme cold temperatures played any role in containing the crude oil and keeping it somehow manageable.
CN spokesman Patrick Waldron said workers are making progress at the scene and work will begin soon on track repairs, but he could not say for certain when the mainline will be open again. He added that cleaning-up the spilled crude oil will also be worked on once the fire is completely out.
Eagle1, I regard the unrest in the Arab area as an Arab problem. The Ukraine/Russia dispute is a European problem! African beefs ought to be solved by Africans. North American issues are ours, Canada, Mexico, the USA. South America and Australia can solve their own as well!
Canada’s efforts overseas usually cost lives and plenty of money. Recently admitted cost equals about 25 million per month or about 300 million per year! For what? Our own infrastructure is failing and we need schools and hospitals and hundreds of other things. If we assist with some advice and foreign aid we have done more than enough!
I do not think we should make things our burning priority which are 1) none of our business and 2) basically beyond anyone’s control except for those who are locally and DIRECTLY affected!
Just my opinion, of course!
Good morning to all my friends in George and others. It’s a balmy day here in Abby. Temp sits at 10c and there is sunshine promised later in the day.
See the games are a great success and many enjoying the events. Sounds like some of the business are a bit disappointed with the activity in their establishments.
But I have great news I think Gaal is planing on coming to Abby for his retirement. I’m sending him some info on our complex. Lots of good choices in property size and price range.
And Eagleone your information is very long and Harper is already involved and providing lots of our tax dollars for assistance to the Ukrainians. That’s all I have for day. Have to get on with my golf game.
Love you all.
Cheers

=====================================================
PG you got that right. It appears that we always seem to back up our friends’ to the south with there aggressive involvement in world affairs that really don’t concern us.
cheers
tired 02, be careful out there today, what with your Gang problems in Abby and now from what I hear, with your corrupt RCMP members as well!!
Trouble in paradise, eh??
Noper , it’s short for diazamo, kinda sounds like it looks actually.
For all the solar sceptics . Colville lake NWT is installing a hybrid diesel /solar/ battery storage system from Saft corp. . Colville lake is just north of the arctic circle and yellow knife .
Hart Guy
It was the Odoursford city cops not the RCMP that are under investigation – 17 of them according to the news.
There was another fatal stabbing last night and if the YTD numbers continue another dozen cars vanished this week.
You can pick up a house in Detroit for a grand but that does necessarily mean you want to live there. Same for the FV?
Name change to Abbottabad-sford in the works:)
And further more , they will not burn a drop of oil for about six months of the year . Unlike they do now . The delivery costs for solar energy is zero .
noticed on last week’s friday free for all and today the anti-french comments. there is a place for all of you anti-french and it is ANYWHERE BUT CANADA!! guess what? – there is a large french community right here in pg they even have their own centre and winter carnival. even after the plains of abraham and the acadian expulsion they are still here and always will be. i have lived here for 7 years now and i hear french spoken quite often. these comments are disgusting, abhorrent and ignorant and to mes amies francais – je suis tres tres desolee. really hope someone from city hall reads this thread so the mayor can make his apologies, after all he did say that the city wanted to showcase it’s diversity – yep, real proud to say i live here (not)
Ataloss, the solar is going to suck during the winter, what with practically 24 hours of darkness! Looks like it will be diesel power generation for 24 hours a day, at least during the long winter months! Batteries also don’t perform very well in the cold winter weather either!
I wonder how much the diesel will operate during the summer months? As a hybrid system, it’s pretty safe to assume that the diesel will run whenever the batteries get a bit too low.
I’d be interested to know what the payback period will be for the expense of the new system.
As far as a reduced environmental impact, we should consider the costs, both environmentally and economically for the production of the batteries. How much energy will be consumed mining for the necessary raw materials/minerals? How much energy will be consumed in the manufacturing of the batteries? Would be interesting to see how this all plays out!
Ataloss, “And further more , they will not burn a drop of oil for about six months of the year . Unlike they do now.”
Are you sure that you don’t mean that they “might not” burn a drop of oil for about six months of the year??
Will not and might not are not the same thing! ;-)
Events not seeing the spectator numbers? Maybe that’s because prior to the Games we were advertising that we did not have the accomodations to house everyone. I believe that we also should have had Mr PG dressed up as an athlete with huge Canada Games banners around him for the last year, maybe even some large billboards at all entrances to the City.
If local businesses are not happy with customer numbers, then take it up with the Games committee and City council.
So far it certainly sounds like the competitors are happy, and that is good news. Hopefully enough visitors leave PG happy about their stay and tell others.
The many volunteers who are tirelessly working to make this a success deserve recognition. We are now at the 1/2 way point, take advantage of what there is to see.
Rather than you asking me for details , read the article and the study . Do you really think that they would install something that doesn’t work ? The reason for the upgrade was the unreliablty of their existing system . The savings in the long run are well worth it . I predict when they get to their eroi that they will add a wind generator or two or three and burn even less fossil fuel . Btw the problem for high density battery systems is not the cold but the heat they generate , unless they are not being used ,which will not be the case .
Hart guy. Please don’t worry about me and crime in lotus land. But since you live in the #1 crime capital of Canada maybe you could give me some hints on safety. Yah and that crime capital also stinks and its unhealthy.
Cheers
I seriously do not understand why some on this site continue to feed the Fraser Valley Troll!
Let’s agree to not reply or respond to any of his inane comments, and perhaps then he will find a site more closely related to his own disgusting little corner of the world!
All he is ever trolling for is reaction and response…let’s not give him the satisfaction!
That’s my bit for the day….
CHEERS!
Once again tired02 can bash PG but get her knickers in a knot if anyone says anything bad about Abbotsford. Kind of a double standard there Ms thin-skin. You really should seek help and try to figure out your infatuation with a place you hate. I’m thinking attention troll but it might run deeper than that.
Oh btw, the news says there was an explosion in abby this morning and the crime scene guys are on hand. Hope it wasn’t a drug lab.
Have a great sunny weekend PGrs, if you can get out and enjoy some of the games!
Haha two seconds too late nytehawk, but I agree with your plan.
The Conflict , War in the Ukraine is a European Problem, we, Harper,Obama have upsolutly no Buisness to meddle in it. What would we say if some one else gets involved in Quebec ? Stay out of foreign Conflicts should be our Number 1 Rule, no Isis wont invade Canada there Friends are allready here!
Why do we have non local food trucks on hand? We should be offering local, local, local!!! This is taking away from all of the local eateries around town. They should have local advertising, coupons, promotional gift cards, etc available. Or, why not something similar to what was done at summerfest? Local restaurants setting up within the village with samples to show off what they have to offer!?
Also, I heard that the out-of-towners are being told not to venture out of althlete village because it’s too dangerous to walk around downtown Prince George. I have no idea who is conveying this message, but I’ve heard it several times.
When a $100 hot dog gets more advertising than our local fare… it’s wrong. Just my opinion.
NyteHawwk, What are you talking about. I was just informed about the crime in Abbottsford, the bad smell and the list goes on. If your a thin skinned keep you remarks to yourself.
This site get over 200,000 hits and mine will always be one. I have posted on this site since its inception why would some of you think its for you only.
And here’s another fact about Prince George. A doctor once told me that there are 33 deaths annually from respatory causes.
You keep maligning Abbotsford I will respond.
Cheers
Being a long time resident of Prince George. I have never seen this positive pride of our city by our residents like I did this past week. Hopefully we can continue after the games are gone. Don’t let Gabby Abby get to you
northernspirit, you are correct. The athletes are being fed at the civic centre and one of the large Foodservice companies from the good old U.S. of A. is supplying the bulk of the products. Go figure, Canada Winter Games, and an American company is feeding them.
Northernspirit I suggest you don’t ever read , Fast food nation . I forget the authors name . If you do , you may end up like me and not ever eat restaurant food again . It’s been many years now . Hotdogs ? You’re a brave man eating one of those . I don’t think I could ever be that brave . Unless of coarse you don’t know what’s in them . Ah , to be blissfully oblivious again .
As someone who has actually taken in numerous events at the CWG I can tell you this.. All the athletes and coaches that I have chatted with love it here, beautiful , welcoming city. Well organized and they games are well run. Speed skating was standing room only today and was excellent.. Women’s gold medal hockey games goes tonight..
Way to go PG
I read that the Abbotsford winter games start shortly after the conclusion of the sucessful Prince George games.
Individual events include:
– Timed event sniffing the difference between mushroom compost and manure.
– Abby Biathlon which involves running, diving behind parked car and naturally shooting but in Abby the other guy has the gun.
– Target shooting with real live targets.
– Find the crack pipe (police active participants in this event)
And of course the marquee team event.
– Shallow grave digging:)
Got your tickets yet?
P Val, I agree with you! All of the athletes, their family members and their coaches that I have spoken with have indicated that they are having a great time. The athletes feel that they have been very well taken care of, the housing is great, the food is great, the City, it’s people and the area are all great and most of all, the competition has been great!!
We, the people that live here seem far more willing to find fault with ourselves and our City than do our visitor!
So far, the games seem to be successful. Some have complained about the lack of attendance at some events, but perhaps they have forgotten that many many locals are at work during the day! Not everyone has taken days off, or receives paid days off to volunteer. Some of us have to work!
We have another week of the games! I hope that everyone has the opportunity to share in the games and the spirit of the games! Prince George has much to be proud of! Let’s focus on that, for a change!!
are having a great timeand their family member (and parent
Oops, no edit function!
Ignore last partial sentence, haha!
Here some ticket info.. To be able to attend any event that day is $20. For a single event it’s $5 Gold medal hockey games are different and have to buy those individually unless you bought the top passes.
I have been hearing lots of wonderful comments about the displays and (free) events down at the Civic Centre. Great entertainment, good music and a very family friendly atmosphere. Apparently the nightly fireworks are better than the Canada Day and other such annual events.
Will definitely go and check it out this weekend.
Hey did you guys hear the news?
It’s 10 degrees Celsius in Abbotsford today. *:o*
No really!!!???? I know right!!!!????
TEN degrees!!!!! Not 11, NOT 9, but 10 degrees!!!
In Abbotsford??? Say it isn’t so!!! Yes!!! It’s ten (10) degrees C!!
NEVER!!!
Isn’t that sumthin’. Must be the Russians playing with the weather. El Nino??? How about the Pineapple Express? Too many cows farting in the Fraser Valley causing a giant Dutch oven? 2.5 million people eshaling? The combined heat from 2 million car engines and exhaust?
No. Wait.
Truth be told, it’s the same boring temperature day in and day out for a millenium in the Fraser Valley.
Why is this news and something he has to tell us every week?
Perhaps he can program a macro on his keyboard…or make it a signature. Not like it changes…
Cheers!
You keep feeding the FV Troll, and he / she is going to think we are interested in what happens the little crap hole they call home.
Once and for all let’s make it clear WE DON’T CARE!!!
The posts from retired02 are tons more intelligent than some others on this site. I for one am not offended by his posts at all. He is clearly sharing info from his community to ours. Honestly we left grade two many years ago. Remember if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
“remember if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”
I’ll second that motion.
