Prince George, B.C. – A Smithers man who died while in the custody of the RCMP has been identified.

He was 53 year old Jacobus Jonker (see original story here).

Jonker required medical assistance following an interaction with police at the Smithers detachment. He was originally taken to Bulkley Valley General Hospital and later transported to Victoria General Hospital where he died Saturday.

The BC Coroners Service and the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) continue to investigate this death.
