BC Curlers Set Sights on Playoff Spot
Prince George, B.C – Have fun and make the playoffs.
In a nutshell, those are the expectations Team BC female curling coach Ernie Daniels has set out for his team at the Canada Winter Games this week.
“My personal expectation is to have the team have a blast here, really enjoy the environment here and the Games itself. But the team would like to make the playoffs for sure.”
He feels with the talent he’s assembled for Prince George, it’s a realistic goal.
“Right now we’ve got a lot of strengths, the team has put in a lot of effort, we definitely have all the tools in the tool kit. It just comes down to mental toughness and being able to deal with the moment when it comes to the harder shots.”
The team consists of skip Sarah Daniels (North Delta), Cierra Fisher (Kamloops), Sydney Hofer (Vernon), and Dez Hawes (Anmore).
And though the players come from various regions of the province, coach Daniels says the team seems to have found its rhythm (3 wins and 0 losses after the first three draws).
“It’s had it’s challenges but at the same token the girls have put the effort in to travel, the parents have been very supportive so its brought it all together very, very well.”
Pool play at the 13 team tournament continues at the Prince George Golf and Curling Club through Thursday, with the quarter-finals and semi-finals scheduled for Friday, and the bronze and gold medal games Saturday.
Curling information officer Jean Mills says the crowds have been rock-solid since the men’s tournament last week.
“Curling fans are incredible. We were full all last week and I expect to be full all this week.”
