Double Medal Winner To Carry BC’s Flag
Prince George, B.C. – Team BC has selected its flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony of the Canada Winter Games.
Squash player Michele Garceau of Surrey will lead the host team into the ceremony at UNBC. Garceau won the gold medal in the first ever Canada Winter Games squash singles competition and followed that with a silver medal in the team event.
After her singles result on Wednesday she said, “I came into the competition seeded fourth so in my mind, just keeping my seeding would have been a great result. To win the gold, I’m just ecstatic. I don’t know what to think.”
The 18-year-old Cornell University student says ““I am very happy and honoured to represent Team BC as the flag bearer. This has been the most ideal set up for squash at the Games with the glass courts and crowds out supporting us. It is a wonderful way to end a great Games.”
“We are so proud of the performances of all of our Team BC athletes at these Games,” said Rob Needham, Team BC Chef de Mission. “Michele’s top performances combined with her leadership qualities and spirit of fair play, made her an ideal choice to lead Team BC into the Closing Ceremony.”
BC won 12 medals Saturday on its final day of competition at the games, bringing its medal total to 88. Well done.
