CNC Sets the Record Straight

Monday, March 9, 2015 @ 10:42 AM

Prince George, B.C. – CNC president Henry Reiser has set the record straight regarding possible layoffs and the future of programming at the college.

This after CNC Faculty Association president David Rourke told 250 News this weekend (see story here) there will be job losses in the double digits later this month and programming cuts due to a $2.8 million budget deficit this year.

“All of the layoffs, if there are going to be any, need to go through a process that is clearly identified in the collective agreement and that (double digit) number may be high,” he says.

“I will say that there are potentially layoffs coming but it may only be with our part-time staff and sessional employees.”

Reiser also dismisses claims by Rourke programming cuts are forthcoming.

“Let’s be very, very careful, nothing is on the chopping block. The intakes for September, 2015 are being suspended. These are opportunities to refresh and re-build. These programs which we plan to re-launch after that process has been completed. There are no cuts.”

He says all decisions regarding possible layoffs and programming will be made at the college’s Board of Governor’s meeting March 27th.

In the meantime, Reiser does admit the college is struggling financially, but is cautious on laying the blame on Victoria.

“I don’t know if that’s really a fair assessment as much as I think some decisions in the past have been made around fees and it is that difference in fees as time progressed that has principally helped the institution find itself in the situation that it’s in.”

He says fees have been capped the past decade or so and as a result are “not up to the provincial standard.”

Maybe Mr Reiser would take a pay cut to help out with the shortfall in funds?

naw, probably not…

I suppose that’s the other side of the arguement

“I will say that there are potentially layoffs coming but it may only be with our part-time staff and sessional employees.”

Is that even an argument? “Potential layoffs”, “May only be part-time and sessional employees”? What does that even mean?

IT means don’t believe a damn word he is saying.OF course it has to do with severe underfunding of our educational system, just come right out and say it HENRY, MAN UP!!! BUT not to worry little Hamish is all tucked away in private school whos funding is on the increase. MAYBE its time the LIBERAL party did some picking of there own……..LOW HANGING FRUIT THAT IS.

Nice SPIN Mr. President, this is not “setting the record straight”.

You are in your position to destroy college programs and alienate students and communities.

In a short time, you’ll leave our awesome community and then Prince George and all of northern BC will be left to pick up the pieces.

Are ALL of those instructors part time and sessionals? Don’t you already pay them less anyway? What about all the new Deans being hired? And Mr.Rourke said clinical counselling services are being discontinued. I don’t see a response from Mr. Reiser. Must be true.

“He says fees have been capped the past decade or so and as a result are “not up to the provincial standard.”

What part of that is hard to understand? Was there a corresponding wage freeze during that same period? Get a clue.
