Get Fit, Spring is Here!

Wednesday, April 1, 2015 @ 3:45 AM

Prince George, B.C. – Now that spring is here, it’s time to get fit!

Northern Health recommends adults do so by performing 150 minutes of physical activity a week.

“A week, not per day,” says Mandy Levesque, regional lead of physical activity with Northern Health. “It’s just over 20 minutes a day which should be achievable for most people.”

However she cautions those adults just starting out to “start slow and work up to meeting these recommendations.”

As for kids, she recommends more “play time and less screen time.”

“Kids need 60 minutes of activity per day. And as parents and caregivers we shouldn’t assume they get that during the day and be okay with them coming home after school and sitting around on electronics and watching screens.”

The City of Prince George is also doing all it can to promote healthy living by launching their “Kids in PG Parks Program.”

“It gets young people into our parks by encouraging kids and their parents to take advantage of the more than 1,500 hectares of parks and open space Prince George is so fortunate to have,” says Robyn McConkey, community coordinator of the Recreation and Cultural Services Department with the City of Prince George. “Here’s how it works – pick-up a passport at City Hall (also available by clicking here), take the passport with you and visit the featured parks and trails and fill out the passports.”

She says it’s “great for all ages” and once the passports are complete, participants will be eligible to win some prizes.
