Nearly Half of all Canadians Cheering on the Habs – Poll
Prince George, B.C. – Go Habs go!
According to a new nationwide poll by Insights West, that seems to be the most common cheer being heard across the country during this spring’s NHL playoff run.
In a survey of adults, it found two-in-five residents (40%) say they consider themselves to be big or casual fans of the Montreal Canadiens – by far the highest proportion in the country.
The six other Canadian teams are ranked lower, including the Toronto Maple Leafs (26%), the Ottawa Senators (24%), the Calgary Flames (23%), the Vancouver Canucks (also 23%), the Winnipeg Jets (21%) and the Edmonton Oilers (17%).
“The Canadiens and the Canucks are extremely popular in their home provinces, partly because there is no intra-provincial rivalry like the ones we see in Alberta and Ontario,” says Mario Canseco, Vice President, Public Affairs, at Insights West. “But the Habs have a fan base that expands outside of Quebec, with two-in-five Atlantic Canadians and three-in-ten Ontarians and British Columbians expressing allegiance to the team.”
When it comes to the five Canadian teams in the playoffs, Montreal has the support of 33% of Canadians, followed by the Senators and Canucks (14%), the Jets (10%) and the Flames (9%).
The poll further revealed that when the first and second choices of Canadians are assessed, 46% are cheering on the Habs, followed by the Jets (30%), the Flames (24%), the Jets (23%) and the Canucks (22%).
The most hated team in the country you ask?
That crown goes to the Toronto Maple Leafs with 19% off all mentions. Montreal comes second at 12%.

Any Canadian team lifting the cup would be fantastic..
Except Vancouver. Really can’t afford the post-game cleanup costs.
Well, I’m not in that half. Was the survey done in Quebec only? I just want the Stanley Cup brought back to Canada. Western Canada would be 1000 better than Montreal.
Ski51, the funny thing about that is.. Years before when Boston lost the cup they had the same riots..it’s to the point that they have laws about it, same thing happened in Chicago too.. You think Vancouver would have thought about those incidents and learned something..but then again it was vancouvers day in the sun..which was sullied by a gang of idiots looking for a excuse to riot..
So,let’s hope it’s Van against the habs in the finals..van wins and see what the habs fans do :)
Montreal doesn’t need to have a riot…. they already have PK Suban handling that kind of bad behaviour on the ice, whether he’s randomly slashing opposition players, or flopping around on the ice like a hooked trout when he gets jostled a little.
Guessing you are not a habs fan brother geeko :)
