Prince George, B.C. – The Little Bobtail Lake fire 50km southwest of Prince George has grown to 24,000 hectares in size.

“Due to strong winds with gusts of up to 35 km/hr, fire activity has increased on the Little Bobtail Lake wildfire,” said the Wildfire Management Branch Saturday night. “Growth was experienced along the northwest, southwest, and southeast flanks. Aircraft are supporting ground crews in trying to gain control of this most recent activity. The fire is moving away from the Cluculz Lake and Highway 16 area.”

The blaze is still 20% contained and is being battled by 270 firefighters, 13 helicopters, 22 pieces of heavy equipment and 8 airtankers.

In total over 300 personnel have been assigned to the blaze.

The fire, which is within 500 metres of the southwestern shore of Norman Lake, is now the subject of a police investigation as it is believed to have been “human caused.”

There has been no loss of structures but it has led to the evacuation of 80 people in the area.

BC Parks has closed Dahl Lake Provincial Park and Bobtail Mountain Provincial Park to all recreational users and has ordered the evacuation of any users within the park.

Rumour has it, that it is the result of last fall’s forestry activity. Maybe a large pile of wood chips left to internally combust.

Ive heard it was someone attemping to burn a slash pile.

I bet the influx of firefighting crews will have a bigger economic impact on the city, than the Winter Games.

PG101 lol that is so true
all the rumours that we hear. The rumour I was told that there was a grad party out there and some kids went around and started the slash piles.
