Prince George, B.C. – You will need rubber boots  if  you plan on taking a stroll through  some areas of Cottonwood Island Park in Prince George. The Nechako River’s level  has been climbing,  but while not near flood level,  the water is high  enough to  cover some pathways.

City of Prince George  parks staff will be monitoring the situation over the weekend,  but  some signage will be put in place to close certain  pathways.

Not Cottonwood Island, try Island Cache.

and every spring this happens so where is the news…. same for all parks along the rivers… every spring they flood….

Today on the radio the City of PG had one of their planners speaking about parks. In the conversation she stated how Cottonwood Island /Island Cache is one of the premier parks of the City. It is disgraceful that the City has done so little to prevent the further erosion of the riverbanks around the park. If you want to see just how much land has been lost, open up “PG Map” and look at the old images and compare it to now. So much money has been spent in the maintenance of the park, but so little has been spent to prevent it from washing away. It’s a shame as the park has the potential to be so much more.

The park was built to be a nature park and money wasn’t to be spent keeping nature at bay. The first thing they did wrong was that they cut all the nature growth along the river bank between the old dirt trails. The reason was that people said they were afraid to walk near the tall grass as they kept hearing things moving in the grass. Every one knew that the park would flood each year which is why the community of Island Cache was forced out – just let nature take it course was the idea.
