Monday, June 8, 2015 @ 7:22 PM

Prince George, B.C.-  The 2017 Telus Cup, which  determines the National Midget Hockey Champs,  will be held in Prince George in late April of 2017.

The BC Major Midget League (MML) and Cariboo Cougars  will be the hosts of the tournament, only  the second time the championship has  been held in this city.  Prince George last hosted the  event in 2001.

“On behalf of BC Hockey, I would like to congratulate the Host Committee for their successful bid to host the 2017 TELUS Cup,” said BC Hockey President Randy Henderson. “BC Hockey has a strong history of hosting national competitions. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host the National Midget Championship and look forward to welcoming the top Midget teams in Canada to Prince George in 2017.”

Mayor Lyn Hall offered congratulations to the Cariboo Cougars for their successful bid for the week long event “Coming off of the extremely successful 2015 Canada Winter Games, and during the city’s most active conference season ever, this news reflects the fact that our city is becoming known as a top destination for tournaments, conferences and meetings. Add this to the Canucks training camp in September and the Cougars’ ‘New Ice Age,’ Prince George has a lot of great hockey to look forward to.”

The week long event will feature the host team, with a team from each of the five regional winners from the Pacific, West, Ontario Quebec and Atlantic  regions.

Cariboo Cougars Head Coach, Trevor Sprague  says the Cariboo Cougars are proud to host the TELUS Cup, the premiere Midget hockey event in Canada ” As a franchise, we’re privileged to represent Northern BC and give northern hockey players a venue to showcase their talents and play the highest level of Midget hockey in British Columbia and the Yukon. Our alumni are a huge part of the community and are the foundation on which our success is built. We’re excited to bring this event to Prince George as a way to honour our alumni’s contributions to this community, both on and off the ice.”

Further details on the event will be released at the start of the 2015/2016  Cariboo Cougars season.

Wonder what great things this will do for our City?

Probably not one damn thing. Just like the Winter Games.

On the contrary, The Winter Games was a great Staycation for us. We spent almost every night at an event. The enjoyment in life is measured by personal outlook in life.

“Wonder what great things this will do for our City?”, Well, definitely will increase ice use. Will create more restaurant activities for parents coming with kids.

Way to go Trevor,

“Well, definitely will increase ice use. Will create more restaurant activities for parents coming with kids. ”

Actually, it will just displace a bunch of minor hockey players like the CWG’s did.

In the end, there will be a bunch of chest thumping, some photo ops for the Mayor as he tries to take credit for it all (it’s all part of his plan to move on in politics; gotta impress the rubes first though!) and the tax payer will walk away even poorer then they usually are.

I did enjoy the winter games…but hate seeing the cost on my taxes.. what cost will this be to me in the long run… none that I can see. I am sure the hotels and restaurants are happy but what about joe tax payer?

Axman wants to live in a city where nothing happens and taxes can only go towards roads. THATS IT, nothing else.

Like serious people, so we pay a little, but PG is becoming a nationally recognized event host. IDGAS that I might pay $100 more in taxes, I want to see this city succeed, and i’m happy to be part of it.

Why don’t you just move already, to a city with tourism dollars, so that your precious tax dollars don’t go towards cool things.

Not at all. I want to live in a city / province / country where the elected officials exercise some degree of fiscal responsibility. We haven’t yet paid the bill for the Winter Games, why are we rushing to spend even more money? It’s not being done to make the city look good, rather it’s being done so that several special interest groups can pat themselves on their collective backs.

He spoke had a Staycation during CWG – I had a get the blank out of town vacation. I spent most of it at Sunpeaks so money I would have spent here, I spent there. How many were like me? And, I ended up gaining an extra 10 lbs this winter because the grooming at Otway was crap – all resources were devoted to CWG – so I didn’t get out there as much as I wanted to. Now I’ve had to cut back to 2 beer a day to lose weight – definitely not fair.

I think this event will be good for local business. It sounds like they haven’t set up a dining hall for all the athletes, so local restaurants and hotels should see some activity, and we should enjoy some pretty competitive hockey.

Now, if Telus would only concentrate on delivering better Internet service, and less on trying to make us believe they’re good guys deep down, I would be a little happier.
