Blacks Closing All Stores

Tuesday, June 9, 2015 @ 12:38 PM

Prince George, B.C. – Blacks Photography has announced plans to close all of its 59 stores in Canada.

The photography giant, which once had a Prince George location, plans to do so this summer.

Blacks spokesperson Luiza Staniec released this statement regarding the closures this morning:

“Technological innovations have changed the way Canadians take and share photographs, with fewer of us using retail photo outlets. Despite the positive momentum and financial improvements our BLACKS team has delivered over the last year, we have been unable to realize profitable growth and it would take considerable investment to adapt BLACKS to ongoing change,” she said. “After careful consideration, we have made the decision the best approach is to turndown down the BLACKS business by August 8, 2015.

As we move forward through this transition, our number one priority is to support our team and our customers. Where possible we are offering our team the option of new roles which will best fit their skill set at a TELUS or Koodo head office, retail outlets, call centres, or accepting a transition package. Approximately 485 BLACKS team members are affected by these closures.”

Sad to see people lose their jobs. 8-tracks, cassettes, VCR’s and VHS tapes all gone. CD’s and DVD’s will follow. Progress can be painful.

will shopping malls exist in the future? most people ordering online now

I sincerely doubt that most people are ordering on line now. I would agree that a lot of people do some on line shopping, however my guess is that the good malls will be here for a long time to come.

I honestly didn’t even know there was a Blacks in town.

Black’s is OWNED by Telus

I used to go to Blacks when I lived in Toronto. It was the place to go for photographic needs. I went there when they first came to town. I also used to go to the mall at least once a week. I thought they left a long time ago.

I also used to go to SAM the Record Man when they came to the mall.

I might go to the mall once a year now.

Indoor malls have been dying for some time. Several have been building office buildings and apartments on their properties.

Today’s malls are outdoor malls such as Parkwood and River Point. In larger cities they are building indoor/outdoor malls integrated with offices and apartments.

One of these days there will be a push to do that at College Heights.

Meh, I have no skin (interest) in Blacks Photography going under. The malls are closing most everywhere in North America, one only has to stay up on “current affairs” to know this. For those of you that can’t, or won’t; just Google: “Death of malls in America”.

Nope, I am just waiting for that news article, or opinion editorial, on the G7 “decarbonisation agreement”. An agreement that kills the use of all oil and gas fossil fuels in 85 years. It was refreshing to hear Stephen Harper saying that oil and gas has no long-term future!

Sophic, so nice to hear you say something polite about our Prime Minister! That must have left a foul taste in your mouth!

As far as oil and gas having no long term future, most of us already know that one day mankind will use up the last drop. You didn’t know that?

“Today’s malls are outdoor malls such as Parkwood and River Point.” .. I believe those are called “strip malls” and have been around long before the standard indoor mall. So they are nothing new.

“The malls are closing most everywhere in North America”

========================

I don’t know, the two largest malls here have recently undergone major expansions as a result of demand and they are always packed. The same goes for the big malls I’ve visited in Montreal and Toronto, packed and always being updated and improved. Same thing when I head down to New York State.

I think it comes down to mall management, who they are able to attract as tenants, etc. It could also be more of an issue in smaller cities where you just don’t have the critical mass of people that the larger centres do and you also have the more recent expansion of big box outlets into markets that were previously “too small”.

Parkwood was once an indoor mall. Black’s had closed in BC a while ago. Telus can order any Black’s items, most of the employees will no doubt be applying for jobs within Telus – not sure if Telusplanet is also part of their umbrella Eastward.

Hart guy, didn’t you know it is against the Sages code to allow comments on comments within this site, take that back.

Sorry for adding that Parkwood was an indoor mall, had not read your comment on me commenting on other peoples comments oh exalted Sage

BLACKS used to be in the Pine Center Mall many, many years ago, right where the Timmies is located now.
