Coleman Hoping for Positive Dialogue with Lax Kw’alaams On LNG Project
Prince George, B.C.- Minster of Natural Resources Rich Coleman says there are two issues remaining in the wake of Pacific Northwest’s decision to move forward with the development of an LNG facility in Prince Rupert. The two issues are the final environmental certificate from the Federal Government, and the passing of legislation by the Provincial Government. Coleman says there are conversations underway now to arrange that special sitting of the legislature, but it will likely take place in July.
There is still opposition from some First Nations in the area of the plant’s development. The Lax Kw’alaams First Nation has rejected the project citing concerns over the impact this development could have on the salmon fishery. Coleman says the work continues to resolve the issues “We are working on the fisheries piece already and so is the company, there’s some new things coming to the table with regards to that .” Coleman says the environmental assessment process provides an opportunity to deal with any issues on impacts to salmon “There has been some work on design and flows and studies that are actually going to be beneficial to be able to sit down and have that become a positive discussion at the end of the day.”
Coleman says other First Nations have already signed on for economic benefit agreements “The biggest thing here is the significant benefit this type of economic development will have to small First Nations communities and jobs and training for their young people to actually make generational change for them. I really had a good relationship with First Nations in discussion and negotiations on this, and that will continue and we will work with them to solve their issues.”

Here we have another example of an idiotic government (conservative backed of course) pinning our province’s future economic prosperity on fossil fuels. We are 15 years away from shipping LNG, and by that time other countries will have been reducing their demand for LNG and Oil by replacing those archaic planet killing sources of energy with clean alternative energy sources.
If Canada, and this provincial government, does not shift it’s focus away from fossil fuels, we will get left behind. In Harpercrites own words; “let me be clear” there is no future in the fossil fuel industry!!!
“In its report, the Council of Canadian Academies says there is a lack of baseline data for groundwater in the vicinity of shale gas development. The B.C. study, which was done by Intrinsik Environmental Sciences Inc., also notes the lack of data in that area and recommends the government consider requiring baseline testing of ground water before gas wells are drilled.”

The only issue is money..
Sophic Sage, what do you propose , immediate total shut down of oil and natural gas production in Canada?
Wow, again with the all or nothing senario from you righties. How about imposing an immediate sanction on all future growth / expansion plans for Oil and LNG in Canada? No new LNG and Oil pipelines, keep the LNG industry the same size, and the Tar Sands the same size. This will result in no loss of jobs.
Then gradually phase in alternative energy development and use, while phasing out fossil fuels extraction.
Did you know that green energy sector jobs now out number Tar Sand jobs in Canada?

You know what to do with the link.
Times they are a changing, and nothing is going to stop the world’s change over to alternative energy sources… our survival as a species depends on it.
They still have to deal with the Hereditary Chiefs down the road when they bring this case to light… The Band chiefs only have control over the Reserves they reside on, not the territorial lands. They can get all the Band chiefs to sign but it’s not worth the paper its written on, according to the Supreme court of Canada
“The race for renewable energy has passed a turning point. The world is now adding more capacity for renewable power each year than coal, natural gas, and oil combined. And there’s no going back.”
