A Weekend of Celebration In Prince George
Prince George, B.C. – This is a weekend of celebration in Prince George, and everyone is invited to take part.
The Prince George Farmers’ Market is celebrating its 20th anniversary today, with several entertainers, including Black Spruce Bog, on hand as well as lots of activities for people of all ages including some special things for dads. The Farmers’ Market on 6th Avenue is open from 8:30 am until 2 pm today.
The Prince George Public Library is celebrating its 60th birthday with a very casual cake cutting event running from 11 am to 1 pm. Everyone is invited to drop by, have some cake and relate stories about their library experiences.
The University of Northern British Columbia is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a Community Celebration today. It begins at 2:30pm (doors open at 2pm) at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre where the history of the university’s founding will be explored, as will the vision for the university’s future in a presentation by President Daniel Weeks.
Then at 4 pm everyone is invited head over to the Agora Courtyard for the unveiling of a display bearing the names of the 16,000 people who pushed for the creation of the university back in the 1980s. And the celebration is topped off with a reception at the Agora Dining Hall at 4:45pm.
Celebrations continue on Sunday, which is Father’s Day and National Aboriginal Day. The flag of the Lheidli T’enneh will be raised permanently, alongside the City of Prince George, Province of BC and Government of Canada flags, at City Hall at 9 am. The public is invited to join Mayor Lyn Hall, Lheidli T’enneh Chief Dominic Frederick and BC Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister John Rustad at the ceremony.
A march of several First Nations groups and related civic and provincial organizations begins, also at 9am, at the Connaught Youth Centre (Ron Brent Elementary) at 17th and Victoria and proceeds to what is currently known as Fort George Park.
The official welcoming to Aboriginal and Metis Day festivities gets underway at the bandshell at 10 am and will include the formal and official re-naming of the park as Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park. National Aboriginal Day celebrations continue through to 4pm.
Meantime, the annual Cruisin’ Classics Father’s Day Show and Shine event, featuring classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, is also taking place at the park from 10 am to 4 pm, and is absolutely free.
And those are just the highlights. Plenty to do in Prince George this weekend no matter what your interest.

Is there no RIDE FOR DAD today???
Stillsmokin…. Ride For Dad is today at Kinsmen Hall, 11am – 3:30pm
Take it the route will be the same as previous years?? Just wondering for never seen anything about it in the paper or anywhere else… thanks
I can only assume so. The Ride For Dad website doesn’t say, and 101.3 The River says “Ride around town 11am-noon”.
btw, if you’re looking up The Ride For Dad website, it’s under Northern BC in Event Locations. They don’t have it listed as Prince George.
Registration is at 9am.
