This One Didn’t Get Away
John Calogheros and winning rainbow – photo submitted
Prince George BC- When John Calogheros of Prince George tells you he caught a 9 lb 13 oz rainbow, it’s no fisherman’s tale.
Calogheros reeled in the fish at the Stuart Lake fishing derby this week. The fish was big enough to net first prize, which was just as healthy as the winning fish.
Calogheros was awarded $10 thousand dollars for his winning catch.
The derby started on Saturday and weigh in of fish closed at 10 a.m. on Canada Day. It was nail biting time for Calogheros as he waited to see if his would hold out as the largest one caught during the event.
By 10 a.m. on July 1st, it was official. His was the largest , although his next competitor was also a good size at 8 lbs 2 ounces.

I’d like to go to next years… I have some family that went this year and had a great time. My dad once caught a 30lb rainbow on that lake about ten years ago. He figured it was one of the biggest rainbow caught on that lake that year. I think my nephew had a 3-4 pounder in this years derby.
The official record for Stuart lake Rainbow is 22lbs :-)
And between the dwindling Stuart River sockeye stocks and derbies like this, it won’t be long until a 5 pound fish wins top prize.

Uh, gonna have to call BS on this one. If he caught a 30 lb fish it was a lake trout (aka char), definitely not a rainbow. Lived there for over 40 years, I can tell you that the largest rainbow I have ever seen (yes, seen) taken in that lake is 19 lb. I heard about 25 years ago an unsubstantiated claim of one caught that was 21 lb, that is the largest I have heard of taken in Stuart Lake.
