Hudson’s Hope, B.C. – With construction of the Site C dam set to start any day, the annual Paddle for the Peace event had a sense of urgency .

The weekend event which saw 150 canoes, kayaks and boats launch from  the Halfway River Bridge area off highway 29, as hundreds of well wishers  were on hand to  send them off.

A few kilometers downstream, those boats came to shore at Bear Flats, where   they were greeted by about 200 people. In all, there were about 700 in attendance.

Guest speakers at the event included David Suzuki, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and Hudson’s Hope Mayor Gwen Johanssen.

This was the 7th Paddle for the Peace event, which is aimed at raising awareness about the planned construction of the Site C dam and the negative impact it will have on the Peace River Valley.

Speakers praised the beauty of the Peace River Valley and focused on its agricultural importanceas the rich soil and the climate make it prime for growing a variety of fruits and vegetables including melons, corn, berries and tomatoes.

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip commented that British Columbians working together can and will stop the dam. He cited court cases launched by First Nations groups and Peace River Valley landowners scheduled to be heard in federal court later in July. If these are not successful, other forms of mass protest will continue to be organized said Phillips.

One of those protests will see a rally outside the BC Hydro building in downtown Vancouver on July 23rd.

Oh my that’s a big crowd? One of the speakers being Suzuki now there is a hypocritical person if ever there was one. Wonder how much he charged to speak as he will only save the world for a fee. Wonder how he powers his multiple homes, fairy dust?

While it is good to see so many people at this Paddle for the Peace event, including guest speakers; David Suzuki, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip and Hudson’s Hope Mayor Gwen Johanssen, it is unfortunate that our federal and provincial security resources are being wasted spying on this event. It is also unfortunate that all these protesters and guest speakers are now on Canada’s Terrorist Watch List!

So what is your answer to increasing energy usage?

Notice everything in that picture is made out of petrochemicals, everything.

Ya if you threaten violence most likely you are on the list. How come the left are so violent? Did you see Suzuki at the Kinder Morgan protest, yelled some insults at the police from a distance then took off like a scared rabbit, no shoulder to shoulder support for the eco mob. His excuse was not wanting to risk loseing his lucrative income from the CBC. See the scared rabbit run.

Sophic Sage. We can all be glad that we are not as obsessed with the Federal and Provincial Governments observing these types of protests as you are.

The opening statement from the First Nations was to thank all the follow terrorist for attending the function,. This was follow by hilarious laugher from everyone present.

Seems those in attendance were much less concerned about the Government than those who did not attend.

Suzuki’s speech left a lot to be desired, however the speeches from the First Nations, and some others were certainly worth listening to.

Once you come to realize that Site C is nothing more than a $9 Billion dollar ploy for Christie and her co-horts to get reelected things start to make sense.

There is no need for Site C.

“Electricity here among most affordable on the planet

While Vancouver may be ranked by the Economist as the most costly in North America, BC Hydro’s electricity rates make power here in B.C. remarkably affordable.

Relative to what the average Canadian is paid, electricity in this country is arguably the cheapest on the planet. Especially in B.C., Quebec and Manitoba.”

I think you mean the ninth guy from the left with the microphone in his ear Sage…

They will still be able to have this annual event even with Site C in place although the river will be about twice as wide.

What is shocking are your complacent comments Palopu and slinky. We are living in a country where a peaceful paddle on the Peace River puts you on a Terrorist Watch List and you both seem to think there is nothing wrong with that???!!!

This is now what Canada does??? Talk about fascist and dictatorship measures, more people should be as outraged as I am, a disgusting infringement on our basic human rights.

Sophic Sage. You don’t know what you are talking about. The paddle on the river was of course peaceful, what else could it be. However the speeches that were made were quite different.

I agree 100% with peoples right to protest, and to assemble and put out their points of view, I also agree that the Government has a responsibility to ensure that these types of situations do not get out of hand, which they can do very quickly. Vancouver Canucks playoff games and the riots comes to mind.

There was absolutely no infringement on your basic human rights. No one was arrested, no one was harassed, nor was it obvious anywhere that there was a police presence. Certainly did not see any police in uniform. There were more police at the Fort George Park celebration a few weeks ago.

So lets not get carried away with talk about fascist and dictatorship. If you did any reading at all about the Gestapo, KGV, Chinese secret service, etc; you would see very quickly that comparing Canada to these Countries and how they operate is about as dumb as you can get,

The problem with your comment Palopu is that you never once mentioned the word “terrorist” or “terrorist watch list” which was the subject and point of my comments. Why should I, or anyone else, be branded and classified by our government as a “terrorist” simply becuse we do not agree with our dear leader or his irresponsible government?

The people involved in the Vancouver riots were “criminals” not “terrorists”. Speaking of which, why the difference Palopu? Why are peaceful paddlers on the Peace River classified as “terrorists” and not potential criminals like the rioters? When Bill C-51 was rushed through, a number of sources tried to get the pathetic Harper Government to define what and who a terrorist would be. Nope the Harper Government refused to do it, so now who is a “terrorist”?… probably anyone who disagrees with any major infrastructure project backed by the government in Canada.

No, Voltaire has it right; “It is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.”

Careful Palopu, you have gone on record as opposing the Site C Project as well, who knows maybe that put you on this “terrorist watch list” as well?

Sophic Sage. You missed by post where I mentioned that a First Nation speaker welcomed all the fellow terrorist to the Paddle for the Peace, at which time everyone laughed because of course there was not a terrorist among the whole group.

So lets not get carried away with this crap about peaceful protesters being referred to as terrorists. This is nothing more than a left wing ploy to get some mileage going into the next election. Scare tactics if you will.

I have been opposed to various Governments on different issues over the years, and have sent them letters etc; outlining my feelings, and what I think about them. I can assure you that I did not pull any punches, and I know for a fact that one letter was forwarded from the Provincial Government to the RCMP because (ostensibly) it was in their jurisdiction. In any event I have no fear of the Government of Canada, or the RCMP or ISIS because I am not doing anything that could be construed as a terrorist activity. I have enough faith in Canada, the Canadian System of Government, and our justice system to feel safe in expressing my opinion on any issue any time I choose.

It is open and honest criticism of Government that keeps our Country free. It is people who kotow to every Government law and refuse to stand up and be counted, that are helping to pave the road to hell.

Have a nice day.

Palopu; specifically concerning “The Terrorist Watch List” so you are able to definitively state that David Suzuki, and Grand Chief Stewart Phillip are “not” on that list?

LOL, yeah… I thought not… with a paranoid Harper who would know?

So Sage lets see the list, seem to have knowledge of it. Hey how’s your electric car running?

In spite of all of Sophie’s whining, in spite of that twit David Suzuki and in spite of good old wimpy Grand Chief Stewart Phillips, the Salteau First Nation has now ratified an agreement between them and B.C. Hydro.

The Salteau First Nation! That would be the one near Chetwynd/Moberly Lake!
