Sunday, July 26, 2015 @ 4:48 PM

Prince George, B.C. – A morning fire in the holding cells at the new Prince George RCMP detachment  on Victoria Street this morning.

Officers immediately attended the cell block area and extinguished the fire which had been started in  a mattress in one of the cells.

RCMP Officers extinguished the fire, all persons in the building, including the  prisoners  in the cell block were  removed  from the area.

Those being held in custody  were transported to  the Prince George Correction Centre until the cell block can be ventilated and cleaned.

There are no injuries to report.

Arson related charges are anticipated against the 43 year old male occupant of the cell.

I’ll guess lightning.

Guess they missed the lighter during the pat down!!

If your locked in a cell boredom is your enemy you would be surprised at what inmates can use to make weapons, tools and even light things on fire

I agree parnelli, someone really messed up on the frisk down…

To the complacent constable, who got sloppy with a search, Wakeup!

I would like to know if the occupant of that cell has been charged with arson!

Read the last line of the story princegeorge.

Shoulda let the fire burn just a little bit longer.

I wrote that I would like to know if he has been charged with arson. I usually read that a perpetrator may be charged or might be charged, that charges are anticipated or contemplated and so forth! Often no charges are ever laid and eventually the whole thing is forgotten! Obviously the man set a fire! That is called arson! So he should have been charged immediately! No if or but, perhaps or maybe!

Whatever he did should be on CCTV recording.

Having sprinklers in a cell is a controversial topic both in the USA and in Canada. It does not say whether there are sprinklers in the RCMP cells. There are likely smoke detectors.

what did this building cost us? 42million? hope the officer who messed up is hit with a serious reprimand (suspended without pay until costs to fix the cell are recouped would be my recommendation)

This is not an uncommon occurrence in penitentiaries. Cost is generally quite low, less than $1,000. Open flames are uncommon. Normally smoldering “fires” from fire retardant mattresses about 50% of the time.

Should have let it burn save us having to feed the DF…
