Yellow Bus Ready to Accept Donations of School Supplies
Prince George, BC –It’s back!
Once again the Salvation Army’s ‘yellow bus’ is parked at the Pine Centre Mall in Prince George, ready to accept donations to the Salvation Army’s annual Backpack and School Supplies drive.
Each year, the program collects supplies and donations to ensure kids in need have the necessary materials to head back to school.
“The start of the school year should present every child with a fresh opportunity for a successful school year” says the Salvation Army’s Bill Glasgow. “Unfortunately, there are many families throughout Prince George who simply cannot afford the steep cost of purchasing a long list of required school supplies for their children.”
The program helps more than 200 children in the community.
There are a couple of ways people can help, either by dropping off supplies at the yellow bus or the Salvation Army’s Ospika address. The other way to help is by making a financial donation at the Salvation Army.
Supplies needed:
- Pens (assorted colors)
- Duo-tangs
- Pencils
- Eraser
- Lined paper (packs of 200-400)
- Rulers
- Binders
- Highlighters
- White-Out
- Glue Sticks
- Geometry Sets
- Calculators
- Child Safety Scissors
- Crayons
- Markers
Families needing back to school assistance can register at the Salvation Army Curt Garland Community Support Centre at 3500 – 18th Avenue today or tomorrow from 9:30 to 11:30, or
Wednesday, August 19th or Thursday August 20th from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
The ‘yellow bus’ can be found inside the mall at the Sport Chek/Food court entrance

The real joke here, is the amount of school supplies they want for kids in elementary school.
This is what maquarades as free education K-12 . Shameful !
Ataloss, what exactly do you mean by “This is what masquerades as free education K-12. Shameful!”?
Ataloss, when I was a youngster, every year usually on the first day of school and usually from our new teachers, my siblings and I would receive a list of required school supplies. Off we would go with our parents to purchase the required items. About the only input that we kids had was choosing what colour of binders or pencil case we ended up with.
When I had a young family, we did the same thing, off to the store to purchase the required school supplies!
Are you suggesting that school supplies should be provided, free to everyone?
There are families that truly are in need and to those families, we should offer assistance! This is one of the reasons why the Salvation Army’s “Yellow Bus” is out and about and ready to accept donations to their annual Backpack and School Supplies drive.
However, there are many families that are financially able to purchase the school supplies that their children require. Some segments of our local population make very, very good wages. Are we to completely ignore any parental responsibility whatsoever by purchasing and providing school supplies for their children? Or should we instead do more to help those that truly need help!
Our education system is not free! It is paid for by the taxpayers of the province. Some of those people don’t even have children while others have children who have outgrown the school system. Regardless, they all pay! Should we not expect that parents take some responsibility for their children? If they have the financial means to purchase school supplies for their children, should they pick up the tab, or should the rest of us?
So Ataloss, I ask again, what exactly do you mean by “This is what masquerades as free education K-12. Shameful!”?
