New Feature on 250News
Wednesday, August 19, 2015 @ 3:59 AM
Thanks to the suggestion of one of our readers, 250News has added a new feature. The feature allows you to like or dislike a comment by choosing the “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” icons at the bottom of each comment.
Those comments which are liked the most, move up to the top of the comment section, and those with fewer votes move in behind in descending order.
We think this will allow more people to indicate their support for particular comments and will eliminate the need to scroll through those comments that are less representative of how the majority of readers feel.
We are trying this for one week, and welcome your feedback on how you think it is working.
Comments
Great new addition. I’m sure I (like some other unnamed posters lol) will have some really unpopular comments at times, because I don’t always agree with the consensus view point (and other people can be just plain wacky at times).
That said I think the flow of the comments should be maintained in order to understand how a session evolves when new information is brought to light. The rating of the comment still provides the info for when a browser might want to skim for what they like.
With the CBC one can choose between the most liked, or in chronological order. Maybe that could be an option in the future?
I like this option as well. Is there an option to read from first comment to last? Comments seem to be random.
maybe you could set it up with a button at the top of the comments so we could choose, most liked, oldest first, newest first, most likes, and maybe editors pick…
not sure how much extra work that would be but another idea to toss around.
This is great! Maybe some of the ramblers will realize that they`re just ramblers.
Some good ideas posted. I am curious to see if anything shifts.
Will make it hard to reply to a post and for them to see it if you can’t sort by date. One vote per ISP would be an idea as well
When I express an opinion I really do not care or worry how many thumbs up or down it gets. It is not a popularity or approval contest. I expect to get mostly dislikes because the truth is often not much appreciated! I do appreciate it more when someone points out a flaw in anything I post (rather than just a quick thumbs down) because the learning process is a life long experience for open minded individuals!
But we still can’t quote a reply?
Changing the order to popularity rather than time makes it very difficult to see any new posts coming up. Loves the thumbs up thumbs down idea though.
If you log out to read the comments they appear in the order they were posted. Not an ideal solution but a discussion is rather difficult to follow if it’s not in chronological order.
Personally, I can’t stand the thumbs up / thumbs down nonsense. If you don’t like something someone said, either respond to it or, if it’s a trivial matter that doesn’t really bother you, ignore it.
Good idea. Saves having to post when you agree or disagree with someone.
I would prefer having the number of likes or dislikes posted rather than percentage. For example it only takes one person to disagree and then it’s 100% thumbs down and doesn’t really indicate how people feel about the comment although it appears to be very negative feedback.
Sorting by popularity rather than post time makes it impossible to have any sort of conversation or discussion. This is a bad change.
Don’t much care about the like/dislike mechanic, leave it in, take it out, no skin off my nose. I don’t post here to get validation from the internet LOL
I have been hoping for this feature for a long time (like CBC has, except they took the dislike option away) Good for you on this improvement. Also gives a perspective on peoples feelings on the blogs (or wasted blogs) being written.
Axman, I did not give you a thumbs up or down, but I do agree with you 100%!
Sure hope this application wasn’t too expensive 250. I don’t like the suffix “with a score of #” added to everyone’s moniker. And I agree with PG, this is not a popularity contest. Please keep the order of when comments were posted.
I like it. I was hoping for this for some time now. I don’t like it going out of order though. Not really a fan of the percentages. I would rather see an actual number.
I don’t mind the like / dislike but as others have said I would prefer a number rather than percentages. I would also like to see the posts stay in order of time posted. When I looked last night I saw someone post up agreeing with another poster,I wondered what they had posted and had to scroll up and down to find out. I found that to be somewhat bothersome and also found it hard to follow the discussion after I realized how things worked with this change.
Those crazy chemtrailers in the sky!
I would like to see the comments kept in order of posting, presently hard to kept track of responses. Instead of percentage number of thumbs up or down would be more useful.
This feature doesn’t appear to be on the mobile site. Staying in order of the time stamp makes it easier to follow the comments. Would prefer likes or dislikes counter over showing a percentage.
Seems to be a good way to clean up the blog site. some of them were pure run aways. Thus this way we truly find out if ones thoughts are really out to lunch or not.
We need to keep in mind that comments on some topics are spread over a 24 hour period and there are many posts. If posts are in chronological order then one only has to refer to his last post to pick up where he left off. He/she can then continue to read the new posts and then make a comment if he desires. Jumping all over to find the latest post on a subject is a waste of time.
The thumbs up and down works ok, I can take it or leave it, however changing the order of the postings is a bad idea.
Lets keep in mind what got us to this point.
Remember the old saying **If it aint broke, don’t fix it**
For my two cents worth, I like the thumbs up/down, but don’t like the thread being reordered based on popularity. Half the fun is going back to see what was posted after your comment, and you pretty much have to log out, or sift through all the threads to see which one is new. The way it currently is formatted, I’ll probably visit the site less.
Look on the bright side, Eagle one will be safely out of sight
I don’t have an issue with the thumbs up or thumbs down but I really dislike the re-ordering. It makes the string of replies almost impossible to follow as there is no logical flow to how the comments are displayed. Personally, I would participate far less often if I had to try to re-construct which comments relate to which posts. It’s not user friendly at all.

Will make it hard to reply to a post and for them to see it if you can’t sort by date. One vote per ISP would be an idea as well . .
.
.More than one person uses my computer to post their comments under my moniker so it would still be nice to vote more than once.
I just noticed the like / dislike feature doesn’t work on the mobile site. Will this be fixed?
Not being able to see comments in chronological order is terribly confusing. Rank order would be a nice option, but not as the sole ordering.
The suggestion for the change came from one (1) reader. From the comments above it pretty obvious that people do not like the change to the format. Do we really have to wait a week to make a decision.??
