Veterans Affairs Back in the Spotlight

Monday, August 24, 2015 @ 4:10 PM

Prince George, B.C. – The treatment of Canada’s veterans was raised again today as an election issue.

Federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau pledged to re-open the nine Veterans Affairs offices closed by the Conservative government, including the one in Prince George shuttered back in 2012.

He also promised to re-establish lifelong pensions for injured veterans and a new Veterans Education Benefit that provides support for post-secondary studies.

Cariboo-Prince George independent candidate Sheldon Clare was the first the address the issue locally when he demanded better service for veterans during his campaign launch last week.

“I think there needs to be at least someone in an office here (Prince George) that knows the veterans files and is tasked to look after them,” he said.

The NDP, who won’t even have a candidate in place until later tonight, have yet to weigh in on the issue locally.

Seems Justin and Mulcair have made a lot of pledges and promises. Just wonder how much it’s all gonna cost, and that there big question, will they keep them. Or, if they get in to power, will they realize they won’t be able to keep them.

I would be more concerned as to why Harper and the cons failed to balance a budget and put us all further in debt all while we have experienced a massive commodities boom in the last few years.

As to the veterans. If the Canadian Government could spend billions of dollars to send them to war surly to God they can afford a few measly million dollars to help them out with what they have suffered. As far as I know our gov’t don’t even supply them with a headstone for their final resting place. The USA at leas does that and more for their vets.

“Here are seven ways the Harper government has waged war on its own veterans:”

Harper forgot about veterans. They haven’t forgotten about him

f-150, if, in the overall economy, ALL the costs of production can’t be fully recovered in prices because consumer incomes from employment are only a PART of those costs, (and an ever declining part due to automation and technological advancement, etc.), having a government balance its Budget is a farce. Somebody ~ either consumers, or businesses, or both ~ has to be going further into debt to cover what currently can’t be paid any other way. And they are, just the same as they were when the Liberals were in power in Ottawa, and the federal Budget was supposedly balanced. The Liberals were lucky, in a sense. They didn’t have a global recession to contend with, as the Conservatives have had to deal with since 2008. And a lot of the ‘balancing’ of their Budgets was accomplished by downloading federal debt onto the Provinces, not paying it off.

Charles. Harper certainly isn’t blameless but when chretien cancelled the helicopter contract lives were lost because we were forced to use ground transport and we had to rent tanks from the Germans.

You want to support troops IMHO don’t send them to war to fight someone who hasn’t attacked us and if u do send them do it with the right gear.

“While the bill was conceived and passed by the previous Liberal government…” Interesting little factoid you don’t hear much when people talk about who took away lifetime pensions.

You don’t have to look very hard or very far to find more!

“Every time CBC needed a self described “veterans advocate” to bash Harper they trotted out Wayne Johnston.

Oops, turns out Wayne Johnston is a fraud!

Wasn’t there only a handful of vets using the office in a week? Did the vets not use the phone before the office was closed? Veterans affair officials travel to PG on a regular basis do they not?

I do agree a one time payout replacing a monthly pension is BS.

How would trudeau handle those already paid out, ignore them?

There is a difference between being given a choice (lump sum payment or lifetime pension) rather than: the lump sum and that’s it!

The Veterans issue is being used to win an election. Seems to me that they are being exploited by the NDP and Liberals.

As far as promises go. Remember the **Little guy from Chicoutimi** Chretian. He promised to get rid of the GST, and the Free Trade Agreement. Hmmmmmm. So much for promises.

Palopu, I guess you like Harpers way better to ignore our Veterans.

Harper likes to wrap himself in the flag but he has betrayed the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line for our country.
