Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Cougars are seeking volunteers for the upcoming hockey season.
Along with all the benefits of becoming a volunteer (including world-class training, discounts at the Cougars store, free meals) games operations and promotions manager Braydon Ouellet says there’s an added incentive to taking part this year.
“So (volunteering at) the Canucks training camp is only open to Cougars volunteers,” he says. “And the only way to volunteer for the Canucks training camp is to be a Cougars volunteer.”
Ouellet says the duties of being a volunteer include scanning tickets, helping people to their seats, and figuring out “what’s what” in the building.
Cougars volunteer David Henley has been a volunteer for 12 seasons and notes there’s been a real change since the new ownership group took over last year.
“Oh definitely. I think the biggest thing is how the ownership have so much pride in the volunteers,” he says. “The first thing they did was train us. They just want us to be the best volunteers in the WHL.”
But the real reason he continues on is the fans. “I do it because I enjoy the fans. And I’ve noticed a real difference from previous years.
“They used to get mad and say they’d never come back but this past year after games I’d do high fives with them. Just the attitude, they’re happy because they know the team has put an effort into it.”
Those interested in joining Henley must commit to participating in 18 of the team’s 36 home games.
If you’d like to volunteer, contact Ouellet at 250-561-0783 or braydon.ouellet@pgcougars.com.
