Public Meeting to Discuss Plight of Syrian Refugees

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 @ 10:02 AM

Prince George, B.C. – The plight of Syrian refugees will be discussed at an open public meeting in Prince George tonight.

PG Citizens For Syrian Refugee Support will meet at 6:30 at the Dreamland School of the Arts (1010 4th Ave).

“We’ll explore specific opportunities to support Syrian refugees in and through the Prince George community,” reads a Facebook posting.

The group was formed less than a week ago and already has close to 100 members.

An estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of civil war in 2011.

The issue sparked worldwide outrage last week when a photo surfaced of a drowned Syrian boy on a Turkish beach.

Alan Kurdi and 11 others died when the boat they were on capsized on route to Greece from Turkey.

Why? Do you know how many kids have been killed over the years in wars, bombing, etc yet now it’s a huge concern….

I say let’s clean up our backyard first.. Child poverty in BC is horrendous, the rest of canada isn’t to great either.. We have so much here we don’t need to add more at this time..

I agree with part of your comment, P.Val, but on the other hand, I haven’t seen any immigrants in the food line ups or refusing to work when they get here, unlike some of our fellow Canadians! I wouldn’t have a problem supporting immigrants; I hate to say it, but I think they are a lot more appreciative!

I do agree, there’s a lot of back yards in the world that need cleaning, including in Canada. The group meeting tonight is focused on efforts to help the hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees in dire straits, but I’d be willing to bet some of those folks, like you, are also busy with local ‘cleanup’ efforts. I wish you all the best with that, and appreciate you doing the same for the PG Citizens for Syrian Refugee Support group. Have a great one!

I so agree….what about the people that have waited years..done all the screening filled in all the countless forms to become citizens…I feel for these people but is there going to be screening on who comes into this country…not all of these refugees may be refugees just saying. ..

Yes, we have a child poverty issue in BC, and this needs to be addressed. This doesn’t mean we can turn a blind eye to international issues as well. The situation is desperate, and help is needed.

“The Hottest Places in Hell Are Reserved for Those Who in a Period of Moral Crisis Maintain Their Neutrality”

We are fully capable of addressing local issues, as well as international issues. The government isn’t a one man show tackling one issue at a time.

The wife, and husband are responsible for the death of these 2 children. The two of them put the children’s life’s in danger. Refugees Do NOT GO BACK TO THEIR HOME TOWN and with Friends all around them (about) 40, bury the wife 2 children in expensive coffins. If this happened in Canada the Husband would have been charged!!! Also why are 70% of the so called refugees Young Men, One even said he left his wife and 2 children behind,so he could find a better life. Great way to get terrorists into country, If we are going to let some in, Make sure we spread them out all over Canada, Some in each Province and territory, all in different towns, After a real SECURITY check on every one on entry to Canada.

Why doesn’t my comment show up?

…all because a picture of a dead kid made the front page. Head out to our local reserves, the refugees live like kings compared to our own…

I soo agree P Val. And as I understand it the boy ( and his family )whose body washed up on that beach was not fleeing Syria any longer. They had a safe and stable life ,albeit not a highly desirable life, in turkey where father had a job. He was using the situation as an opportunity to get even more.

We are very fortunate to have been born in Canada. I couldn’t imagine being raised in a war stricken country. People living in Canada are gullible & naive to how these people view life’s values. Canada has always been generous, expecting nothing in return.
I truly believe we are all one meal away from becoming savages ourselves lucky for us we haven’t had to experience this.

@maverick 1965 – ‘ People living in Canada are gullible & naive to how these people view life’s values.’

Typical response from a bleeding heart Lib. I’ve traveled the world, been to the middle east more than 10 times, Europe 5 times. The reason I do not want these refugees, is because I HAVE SEEN THE WORLD. You people have one argument, about how selfish and ‘gullible’ the people that don’t support mass immigration are. However, the truth is, I love this country so much I do not want it tainted by parasites with no work ethic or willingness to integrate into society.

Syrians do not gel, they do not ‘blend in’. Stop having kids, figure out your own mess, stop ruining what we have created with the sacrifice of our current military, and past generations. This country isn’t a fluke, immigrate here legally and welcome to the club.

I’m sure any of the people critical of helping refugees haven’t had family in a war-torn country. If this was your brother, sister, niece, nephew trying to escape a dangerous situation. I’m sure the view would be different.

At the end of the day, they’re people the same as us. It would be criminal to turn a blind eye.

‘It would be criminal to turn a blind eye. ‘ – it would be irresponsible, as a country, to allow thousands of people with no documentation, or criminal background check, into Canada. But hey, lets flood the nations with thousands of bodies with no disease check, terrorist check or skill sets..what could possibly go wrong? lol

Leroyjenkins – I’m not sure where to begin to address your racist stance.
Having view points like these is what makes prince george look so hill billy.

Search .
Refugees pay more income tax to Canada than millionaire migrants.

“‘It would be criminal to turn a blind eye. ‘ – it would be irresponsible, as a country, to allow thousands of people with no documentation, or criminal background check, into Canada. LOL you’re right. We should ask the first nations how masses of people with no disease check, or background checks flooding their nation worked for them…

Also, no one is saying just open the door and run in… there are checks and balances in place for refugees.
Millionaire migrants literally lend the government money for a citizenship, so lets not pick on those whos lives are in danger.

‘LOL you’re right. We should ask the first nations how masses of people with no disease check, or background checks flooding their nation worked for them…’ – You bleeding hearts are all the same, always going back to the first days of settlement to prove your point. As if, this great land would have never been populated by anyone but the natives, even till this day.

So as you use your high tech lifestyle, to drown your white tears of guilt, maybe you should volunteer all your time to the plight of the natives? I’d rather see them taken care of, than 10k syrians in Canada. Interesting that you would rather help those outside of Canada, than inside.

Oh, and you thinking there would be appropriate ‘checks and balances’ in place.. lol

Leroyjenkins – I guess your ancestors made it through immigration by fluke. It’s disgusting that we have citizens like you.

I find it absolutely amazing that there are so many people in PG who have:

1) An in-depth knowledge of the civil war going on in Syria;
2) A clear understanding of how that war has impacted the people living there; and
3) A detailed demographic breakdown of the people who are fleeing the country, along with knowledge on whether they have diseases, are terrorists or have employable skills.

Tell me, did you learn all of this from the clips on the nightly news or are you completely talking out of your rear end?

I hate this “I would rather” stance… We would be rather ineffective if as a country we tackled one issue at a time.

My point about aboriginals is to point out that you’re not gods gift to this continent, and most Canadians (myself included), come from family which immigrated to Canada.

The Canada we have today, isn’t a Canada that was born out of complying with the traditional norms. It is a Canada that was built on European values and believes, but this doesn’t mean it’s the superior way. The face of Canada is changing and that’s ok. (coming from a European).

I would rather live in a Canada that would lend a hand to help people in crisis, than a Canada that was too self-involved to worry about what happens abroad.

Sweden with a population of just over 9 million has absorbed more refugees than Canada. Germany has absorbed thousands, and they have a comprehensive system to match people with jobs with their appropriate skills. Canada could benefit from a larger population, because someone has to pay for all this debt being left behind by the baby boomers.

Hey leroyboy…..the feds…harpers gov. has done NOTHING for the Indeginous of Canada ..1,200..missing and Murdered women and it is NOT on his radar….if they were allwhite…I am certian things would be different.
A new gov. is going to make things rite…
This war in Syria has been going on 4yrs now…240,000 Syrias killed by there Tyrant B.assad…while these PPLs were pleading for arms to stop this KILLING of the innocents..all they were doing waz pushing for a regime change …Hey just like us..only he choose to kill his own ppls..and is still doing so…4-5 millions of PPL have been put in dire straits…..no worse..and we should be helping these ppl not dropping bombs on them…we have no business in this …..we are not Baby killers…the U.S. is and isreal……

NMG it’s bad in pg but take heart . It actually gets worse . Sarah Palin said that the natives should go back to where they came from . Maybe our righties could make her an honorary citizen . You just can’t make this stuff up . Yikes .

pgjohn – you should research the social and economic issues Germany and Sweden are having, due to the mass immigration of Turks and Syrians over the years. There are a lot of very popular blogs about the ‘white flight’ from both countries, even lovely Sweden…

Have a quick look, enjoy how that ‘multiculturalism’ worked out over there… I bet you come back with ‘those blogs are written by racists’ , instead of reading what the actual people think now that they have lost their country they once knew.

Others are correct in saying mass refugee influx doesn’t work, it never has, never will. Get your head out of the sand. Enough of the ‘we are all immimgrants’ bs, that stopped being an argument 3 billion people ago, when countries wanted, and needed an influx of people to support the building of countries.
