Will the Syrian Refugee Crisis Decide Votes?
Prince George, B.C. – With the Syrian refugee crisis making local, national and international headlines the past week, will it decide the votes of Canadians when they head to the polls October 19?
“I don’t think so,” says UNBC Political Science Professor Dr. Gary Wilson. “I think there are other issues out there such as the economy that will really decide where we’re going and what the outcome of the election will be.”
And considering how far we are from election day, he says other issues are sure to come up and steal the spotlight.
“In an election of this length you’re going to find that there are many different issues that crop up almost on a weekly basis,” says Wilson. “I mean a week, two weeks ago we were talking about senate scandals and Nigel Wright and that was dominating the media.”
However he says that doesn’t mean the issue will be ignored once election day gets closer.
“It will be an issue in the sense that it may come up in the TV debates about foreign policy and security policy,” says Wilson. “I think the politicians will in some ways try to use it either to support or cast out on policies of the government.”

I suspect Dr. Wilson is correct. There have been a number of distractions that dominated media coverage of the election, but come October 19, I suspect (hope) people will disregard those and vote on real issues that have more significance for Canadians. I might add that the move to “strategic voting” is dangerous, vote for those issues that matter, not to try and vote someone out of office (ie: The anyone but Harper strategy).
Do not let the heavily biased media decide your vote. Use many sources for information and issues.
Everyone is entitled to one’s own opinion. If people vote for Canadian values like democracy, basic human freedoms and rights (guaranteed in the Charter) and the environment the “anyone but Harper strategy” will implement itself and we will have the change that the majority of Canadians are hoping for.
Hopefully (thanks to the intentionally long campaign) some more issues will emerge which will put the final nails in the coffin.

Vote for the best candidate to represent our region. One that will bring our voice to Ottawa.
