Possible features for a skateboard park

Prince George, BC- Flow bowls, plaza terrain, ditches, snake runs, just some of the terms to describe different features possible in the proposed Skateboard park in the Hart.

The workshop held last evening at the Hart Pioneer Centre,  presented boards with images of a variety of features.  Those who attended were welcomed to indicate which features would be most desirable.  “I would really like to see a plaza style” says one skate boarder. That style means lots of rails but will need a larger footprint as the features require a “run up”.

The workshop also asked for suggestions on how to create a long term vision for the Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery park.  The parents of the young man for whom the park is named are excited about the proposed upgrades.  “We are long time residents of the Hart” says Colleen Fitzpatrick  “It’s wonderful that this will be a focal point of this community.”

The goal is to develop a space that is accessible, multi generational and useable year round.

As  Trevor Morgan of New Line Skatepark Inc flipped through a slide show of other skateparks,  the  group of 25 or so skate board enthusiasts who were among those in attendance let out an audible gasp of envy as the  image of the park  at The Forks in Winnipeg  filled the screen.  It was an image of a park that incorporated historic significance, skateable  art and multi generational  use.

Morgan says there are many possibilities for  the Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park “The site looks like a great venue for a skatepark” .

The workshop was phase one. Ideas presented last evening will be taken back and worked on before being presented to the community for final approval.  Then it will be a matter of budgets and fundraising before construction can start.

The City is partnering with Rotary and the Hart Community Association in this project.

This family is looking forward to this park!

The Hart needs this park!! Yesterday I went to the Hart drugstore and there were 3 boys riding skateboards on the side of the building where the flower shop is in the summer and using the stair there for tricks, those stairs lead to the road, just takes a little speed and an oops and someone could be seriously injured. When I left there, 3 more boys on skateboards were on the side road in front of Tim Hortons also riding and jumping etc. Kudos to them for being out enjoying the beautiful day, but they need somewhere safe to go!
