Walk With Cougars Promotes Healthy Living and School Zone Safety
Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Cougars teamed up with St. Mary’s Catholic School for a new initiative this morning: Walk To School With The Cougars.
Several players and scores of students participated in the walk which left the Earl’s parking lot at around 8am.
“We’ve done it with other teams in the past and it just encourages kids to walk to school and encourages people that are driving around to slow down because kids are back in school and they need to be aware of that,” said organizer Janet Holick.
“It also gives students the opportunity to get a little bit more personal than just seeing the players on the ice. They get to talk to them and interact.”
Goalie Ty Edmonds seemed eager to take part.
“I’ve never been a part of something like this, it’s definitely a new experience for everyone so it’s cool to see the kids happy and smiling and also out getting some exercise.”
Student Kate Patrick was so excited about the walk she created a sign with sister Kassidy.
“I wanted to tell people to be aware of kids to keep them safe.”
That sentiment was echoed by principal Brent Arsenault.
“It’s getting a little darker in the mornings now and people aren’t used to the speed zones. You have to consciously think of that especially coming back in September.”
The Cougars felt the initiative, which will continue through the season, was a win win for both sides.
“Oh you bet,” said Cougars vice-president of business, Andy Beesley. “We thought we’d have 40 kids that would want to walk to school with the Cougars and ride home on the bus but it’s turned into about 100.”
