Smooth Sailing Through Quesnel

Monday, October 5, 2015 @ 3:53 AM

Quesnel, BC –  Work is underway to re-surface approximately 20-kilometres of Highway 97 in the Quesnel area, as part of a fall paving project worth almost $6-million dollars.

“The highways and roads in the Quesnel area are an important part of the provincial road network, whether they serve the local population or the resource and tourism industry,” says area MLA Coralee Oakes.

“This project will go a long way towards making the drive safer and increasing mobility for motorists when travelling on these roadways.”

Quesnel Paving has been awarded the contract to pave the highway between Quartz Road and the junction with Highway 26, and between Naver and Plett Roads.  In addition, approximately 6.5-kilometres of local side roads will be re-surfaced.

The work will wrap up later this month.

Smooth sailing through Quesnel would mean a Bypass around it.

I so agree, Quesnel needs to get a new mentality about the bypass. Prince George did back in the 60’s with their bypass, and it became pretty much the heart thru the 70’s to now.

Does downtown really die. Not really, it just means that the business owners have to be a lot more creative. The younger generation 18-30 is a lot more frugal and careful with their spending habits than their parents. 35-60 yr olds. They are smarter buyers, and are willing to spend an extra 5-10% more on items $100 and less, for better quality, brand names, and service. That is what the stores need to focus on. That is what is going to save small retailers.

Burns Lake is another community that needs a bypass. Fraser Lake, Houston, Vanderhoof, Smithers are all well laid out to accommodate this thru way alley. Terrace and Williams Lake is a bit awkward, but it works. Prince George, considering the size, with the huge cross hairs, it works, it just needs that circle road. from Sintich to hwy 16 west.

After that a connector for hwy 16 west to Hart Highway. Don’t need to build the hwy 16 east to the hart. because of the Edmonton to Grande Prarrie is in place.

For health, environment and safety reasons Quesnel should have had a bypass around Front Street many years ago. There are food businesses, a seniors residence and a hospital within feet of #97, together with a couple of traffic light intersections which require frequent traffic stops with all the associated truck and car engine idling. It is just not safe!

The North is being neglected. Plain and simple, no rational excuse can be made for continued inaction. Wake up, Victoria!

Actually I do believe the BC Ministry of Transportation,

is doing a 2 year long traffic and transportation study.

Of the Quesnel city and area.

At the request of the City of Quesnel.

to address some of the above concerns.

We should expect to see some type of report in 2017/18.

acrider55 couldn’t agree more …….. worst part of my trips to Kelowna / Vancouver …… going through Quesnel ……………. would love to be able to bypass it altogether
