Proposed Improvements To Tyner ID’ed For Capital Plan
Prince George, BC – City staff have identified a number of improvement projects for Tyner Boulevard that they’d like to see included in the five-year Capital Expenditure Plan, including some preliminary work on preparing for an eventual twinning of the route, should traffic volumes begin to warrant the four lanes.
Since 2007, University Heights has seen 128 properties built on the northeast side of the boulevard, with another 32 expected to be built over the coming year. On the southwest side of the route, vehicles from 62 single family lots access Tyner from Parkside Drive.
In response to a request from City Council earlier in the year to look at the possibility of a deceleration lane on Tyner at University Heights Drive, the City’s Engineering and Public Works Department has outlined a number of capital projects to be included in the 2016-2020 plan to address concerns along the boulevard.
In a report to be received by City Councillors tonight, Department General Manager Dave Dyer has presented five capital projects:
- Tyner Boulevard/University Heights Drive intersection improvements that would include the construction of a southbound left turn lane and a northbound right-hand deceleration land to be carried out in one or two phases
- A future traffic light at the intersection, as development continues along the corridor and traffic volume grows
- street lighting on the northeast side of the boulevard to illuminate both the roadway and trail
- two new transit bus pullouts at the intersection with University Hts Drive
- Tyner Boulevard four laning – Dyer notes in his report that the need may not be required for some time, but says it’s important to prepare concept and preliminary designs
Although calculated according to industry standards, Dyer cautions the estimated costs are based on projects that are at a conceptual stage. The costs are shown in the chart below (courtesy CPG)…
Council will consider the proposed projects when it deliberates the Capital Expenditure Plan later this year.

Yet I see the city is still ignoring the push for the most important project….. the extension of Ospika to Hwy 16. Hello? Does anyone at the city not see the importance of this road?
Lets get this done with. 4 lanes from the University to Domano, and as above, push Ospika to the highway finally..
Yes we need another nascar track like the hart.
Where would you guys like to see Ospika meet the hiway ? At Marleau or at Kimball ?
Or Westgate ?
DI: Kimball? Where in the world are you DI?
Hook Ospika directly to the spot of land just east of Marlow (Westgate) – land has been set aside for connecting to and crossing Hwy 16.
Agree with PVal, not sure about the ‘nascar track’ on Tyner.
nuffsnuff1….are you advocating for a set of lights that close to the Domano intersection or a $30 million dollar cloverleaf ?
$30 million cloverleaf!!!
Hubby and I were chatting about this in August when they were re-paving that stretch. He speculated they would put in the turn lane(s) for University Heights while doing this road repair, but I said I doubted they would be actually thinking this far ahead. Sadly, I won that argument.
Really, that road is no longer wide enough for the amount of traffic that travels along it daily. Based on the amount of land cleared for building in University Heights, the population in that enclave will more than double and each household has an average of two cars these days.
The number of bumper riders who dislike it when you slow at the speed changes is outrageous too. And the aggression expressed by driving erratically as the road widens to two lanes at Ospika is stupid (but not surprising).
I also agree that the Ospika extension needs to be finished. It would peel off all that traffic that wants to go west and make 97 and Tyner a much more civilized intersection.
I believe that the City may be holding off on the Ospika to Hwy 16 connection in the hopes that the province will bear the costs. The Tyner/Domano @ hwy 16 intersection already ranks as a provincial safety issue, due to the frequency of accidents there. It will only get worse thanks to increased volume. If the City holds out long enough, then the province may be forced to step in and remodel the stretch of Hwy 16 (including intersections/ramps) from Westgate to Ferry. Makes sense does it not?..and THAT is why I am fundamentally wrong!
Tyner/University is growing so fast. With the development plans showing future expansion westward all the way to the transfer station across from Westgate, the Hwy will need some changes.
